Tips for Making a DIY Foot Sugar Scrub

Answers to all of your questions about making a your own foot scrub at home, including tips and substitutions.

How to use a foot scrub?

Once you’re done making your exfoliating scrub, it’s time to use it to beautify your feetsies!

  1. The very first thing you want to do is wash your feet really well with a good castile soap or other natural soap.
  2. To use, take a small amount on your fingers and rub in a circular motion, making sure to really give your feet a good rub. It feels so nice on achy feet!
  3. After you’ve scrubbed really well, you can go ahead and rinse your feet in warm water.
  4. If the scrub isn’t getting enough of the dead skin removed, you can always follow it up with a pumice stone.
  5. The best time to use a foot scrub is right after bathing, and preferably at night, so you can follow up with a good foot cream. After moisturizing, put on socks and you’ll wake up with soft, moisturized feet!

Other essential oil ideas?

You can use any essential oil in this homemade foot scrub recipe if you want a different smell. Essential oils that pair well with honey include:

In the colder months, sometimes I’ll use a combination of orange and cinnamon. Peppermint foot scrubs are also really popular around the holidays (my Peppermint Sugar Scrub bars recipe always trends during that time of year).

And in the warmer months, sometimes I combine lemon and lavender. Experiment and you’ll find scent combinations you love.

Alternatives to coconut oil?

Like most scrubs you can use other types of oil besides coconut like olive oil (also used in my brightening hand scrub). Or you can use any carrier oil you like such as sweet almond oil, avocado oil or even jojoba oil.

Why honey?

Honey is a natural humectant, which means that it helps draw moisture to it. I like adding it to homemade beauty products because it adds to the moisturizing qualities.

It’s also used in my Honey Tea Face Wash Recipe if you enjoy moisturizing beauty products.

Can sea salt be used instead of Epsom salt?

While most people think of Epsom as a bath salt only, I like using it in foot scrubs because it’s a coarser grind than most sea salt and I like how it works. In addition, sea salt has a totally different chemical makeup than Epsom Salt. Sea salt is sodium chloride and Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate.

You can use sea salt instead – it just may not be quite as exfoliating. If you like salt scrubs, be sure to check out my Salt Scrub Bars recipe.

Best kind of sugar to use?

There are many types of sugars, and I personally like to use a coarser grind granulated sugar on my feet. When I make a face scrub, on the other hand, I like to use finer sugar granules or even brown sugar (like in my Brown Sugar and Honey Face Scrub).

Some people like to use brown sugar but I find it to be less exfoliating. While the softness of brown sugar works well in many hand and body scrubs, I don’t recommend it for dry feet if they’re in need of a deep scrubbing.

More Foot Pampering Ideas?

If you can’t get enough of DIY foot care products, here are some of my other favorites:

DIY Cracked Heel Cream. If you want to take excellent care of your feet, you have to moisturize as well as exfoliate. This rich foot cream uses shea butter and coconut oil to give feet the moisture they need, especially after wearing boots all winter.

DIY Tea Foot Soak. This recipe makes the best homemade foot soak because it uses tea leaves, which also have exfoliating properties. I like to soak before exfoliating. It makes the process even easier and more effective.
