Flu season is in full swing, and it has officially reached our home so natural home remedies for the flu are at the top of my mind.
Zoë came down with the flu on my birthday, and 3 days later it hit me like a ton of bricks. Fever, chills, severe body aches, headache, sore throat and runny nose – fun! Luckily Kaylee has only had a very minor fever and it hasn’t hit Brian yet, but it still could.
Of course taking preventative measures like eating well and ensuring you have the proper nutrient levels is key, but what do you do when the flu strikes?
Here are 9 natural home remedies for the flu.
1. Rest and Sleep.
This one is common sense, but not all of us are willing to slow down and take care of ourselves when we’re sick the same way we do when our kids are sick. If you’re at home with the kids, try to make it fun and declare a jammies and movie marathon day. It has made it much easier for me to be able to rest during the day.
2. Drink Plenty of Fluids.
When you have a fever, it’s very easy to get dehydrated. Be sure you’re drinking plenty of quality fluids like water, coconut water, kombucha and herbal tea. I try to have a few things at my side at all times so I can sip on what sounds best to me at the time. I also like drinking Coral Cell EnerG once a day to get some extra nutrients in with my fluid.
3. Drink Herbal Teas with Medicinal Qualities.
Many teas have medicinal qualities, so when I’m sick, I try to focus my tea consumption on teas that will help me heal. My favorite right now is the Double-E Immune Booster from Bulk Herb Store. Good Girl Gone Green recommends Ginger Lemon Tea.
4. Use Essential Oils.
There are some great uses for essential oils to help support your immune system when you have the flu. For headaches, I like to put a drop of lavender on my temples. Then when that absorbs, I rub in a drop of peppermint oil. Most of the time it’s like magic for taking away my headaches, or at least making them bearable.
I also make a mixture of fractionated coconut oil, oregano oil, lemon oil and On Guard essential oils from doTERRA and apply that to the bottoms of our feet. I also like to rub some extra around my neck and on my wrists.
5. Consume the Master Tonic.
The Master Tonic is potent and spicy, but it works. I make it in big batches and we’ve been giving out bottles to friends, who report back nothing but fabulous results. I’m taking it this time around with the flu and I can tell a difference after I take it. It definitely numbs the pain in my throat too!
6. Make Elderberry Syrup.
I have been hearing more and more about elderberry for immune system boosting. I’ve tried it in a liquid herbal supplement and the Double-E Immune Boosting Tea. You can buy ready-made elderberry syrup, and you can also make elderberry syrup yourself (which is much more affordable).
7. Take Oscillococcinum.
Oscillo is a homeopathic medicine, which is supposed to temporarily relieve flu symptoms like fever, chills, body aches and pains. You’re supposed to take it at the onset of symptoms for best effect. There are no side effects, drug interactions, contraindications or “masking” of symptoms with Oscillo.
8. Supplement with Vitamin D.
Vitamin D levels are closely tied to your immune system, so you want to be sure you’re taking your Vitamin D supplement when you’re sick. Be sure your supplement is Vitamin D3, not D2, which isn’t as effective in humans.
9. Use Honey in Your Natural Remedies.
Honey is excellent at soothing sore throats and coughs, and is naturally antibacterial and antiviral (raw honey only; pasteurized honey is not good for you). I like adding raw honey to my herbal tea once it has cooled a bit. You can use honey to make natural cough drops and I really want to try this Asian pear and honey remedy!
