fbshare_03Thank you to Seventh Generation for sponsoring this post, and bringing this very important matter to my attention.

If you have been reading Happy Mothering for long, you will know that I am a huge label reader, and I’m very particular about the products that I allow into my home. I have spent a lot of time researching ingredients and chemicals so that I can make the best choices for my family’s health.

What you may not know is the reason that so many harmful ingredients are allowed into our personal care and cleaning products. In 1976, Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) was passed, and it hasn’t been updated since.

What that means is that since 1976, 85,000 synthetic chemicals have been introduced into the market, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has only required testing to be done on fewer than 10% of them! So, there are more than 80,000 chemicals circulating in products in the United States that have never been tested to see how they affect our health and our environment. Scary!

We have a right to know how different chemicals affect our health and, until we do, these chemicals should not come into contact with our families. It’s just not worth the risk. Scientists have linked exposure to toxic chemicals to many health risks, such as Cancer, Alzheimer’s, learning disabilities, asthma, birth defects and various reproductive problems. I don’t want that for myself or my family.

We need to take action to protect our families and our environment. Will you help me?

We need to band together and demand Congress to re-evaluate the TSCA for the very first time since 1976. We need to collect 100,000 signatures so that the Toxin Freedom Fighters can deliver them to Congress on April 30, 2014.

This is an opportunity for you to stand up and demand better for your family.

Will you join me and sign the petition

Chrystal,

That is very alarming to learn. I can’t believe that there are 80,000 untested chemicals out there right now :-/. I’ve always considered myself to be fairly informed (I try to read labels), so this is saddening to learn. It makes you wonder what else you don’t know!

I highly encourage people to read the labels. It’s especially careful when you’re planning for get togethers that are bigger than the norm. For example, when planning family reunions, people are often so burdened by the quantities of food they have to prepare that they resort to the “easy foods” not realizing what they are actually feeding to their families.

I never even considered that the chemicals you are using to clean up after them could have just as big an impact. Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. Consider my signature added! :-D

All the best,
Laura
