My personal favorite version of this classic dessert is gluten free Dutch apple pie. You get the best of both worlds with a flaky pie crust on bottom and a delicious crumble on top.

Plus, I find that it’s easier to get the bottom crust right with gluten free ingredients than the top crust. So, I prefer to make a crumble topping instead, and my whole family seems to prefer it this way too.

So next time you need a tasty dessert, try making my gluten-free apple pie recipe. It’s the perfect dessert to serve on special occasions every fall.

By the Numbers: How to Make Gluten Free Apple Pie

Answers to all of your questions about making the best Gluten Free Apple Pie, including tips and substitution ideas.

Step 1: Make Gluten-Free Pie Crust

Start by making your gluten free pie crust or getting your premade one ready. When the homemade crust is ready, preheat your oven temperature to 350˚ F. You should dust raw dough lightly with gluten free flour.

Step 2: Make Apple Pie Filling

Add 6 cups of chopped apples to a large mixing bowl and pour 1 tablespoon of lemon juice over the slices to help prevent them from browning.

Six cups of sliced and peeled apples in a glass mixing bowl.

Add ½ cup granulated sugar, ½ cup brown sugar, ¼ cup gluten free flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and ¼ teaspoon nutmeg to a small bowl and mix to combine.

Pour the dry mixture over the apples and mix until all of the slices are evenly coated.

Pour the apple mixture into your prepared pie pan. It will be above the rim of the pan – that’s okay. They will cook down. Put 3 tablespoons of butter on top of the apples. Place in the oven and bake for about 30 minutes.

Optional tip: To prevent the pie from bubbling over in your oven, you can place the pie plate on a baking sheet to catch any spillage.

Step 3: Make Crumb Topping

When the 30 minutes is almost up, you want to make your crumble topping. Add ⅓ cup of granulated sugar and ¾ cup of gluten free flour to a bowl and mix them. Then add 6 tablespoons of cold butter to the bowl and mix in using your dough blender. You can also use your hands.

Remove the apple pie from the oven and sprinkle the crumble mixture over the apples, which should be cooked down a lot now.

Step 4: Bake Pie in Oven

Place your pie back into the oven and bake uncovered for another 20 minutes. When it’s done, the apples should be bubbling and the crumble topping should have a nice, golden brown color to it.

Step 5: Serve Apple Pie

Allow the pie to cool down, then you can slice and serve it on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Tips for Making the Best Gluten Free Apple Pie

Answers to all of your questions about making the most delicious apple crumble pie, including tips and substitution ideas.

Best apples

Tart apples, like granny smith apples, or crisp apples, like pink lady, usually make the best apple pie. However, I’ve made apple pies with just about every type of apple you can imagine, including crab apples from around the neighborhood, and they all turn out wonderfully.

Best gluten free flour

I typically use Cup4Cup in my gluten free crust. However, any gluten-free flour blend that contains xanthan gum, like Bob’s Red Mill 1 to 1, should work as well.

Cup4Cup has a lot of corn starch in it, so my filling doesn’t require extra. If there isn’t any corn, potato or arrowroot starch in your chosen gluten free flour blend, you’ll want to add a teaspoon of one of these starches to the dry ingredients that coat the apple filling.

Vegan option

If you want to make a vegan apple pie, you’ll need to replace the butter with dairy-free butter. You can sub up to half coconut oil, but the crust doesn’t tend to hold together as well if you use all oil rather than butter.

What’s a dough blender

This handy device goes by a few different names – pastry blender, pastry cutter, dough blender and dough cutter. They work so well for combining flour and butter that you’ll want to pick one up if you plan on making pie crusts regularly. It saves so much time!

If you don’t have one now, you can use two butter knives to work the crust ingredients together. Your hands also work, but check out the dough blender I currently have and love… it’s more durable than the one in the pictures.

Help: the crust edges burn

If you find that your oven cooks a bit hot and the edges of the pie crust brown too quickly, you can cover it with aluminum foil or a pie crust shield during the second half of baking.

Storage tips

Leftover pie should be store in the refrigerator covered in plastic wrap or in an airtight container. For best results, be sure to let the pie cool to room temperature before placing in the refrigerator to prevent condensation, which can lead to a soggy crust.
