Happy first day of Summer! Have you figured out what sunscreen you’re going to use this summer? I have been testing several natural sunscreens this Spring, and I’m excited to share one of my favorites with you today.

TRUE Natural is a fabulous brand that is committed to 100% natural products, which are both effective and free from harmful ingredients. All of their products are made in the USA and are Certified Natural by the Natural Products Association!

One of my favorite things about the TRUE Natural sunscreen is that it doesn’t leave that chalky white residue all over your skin when you apply it (if you’ve tried very many natural sunscreens, you’ll know what I mean). And they don’t use nanoparticles to get that effect either!

Did you know that FDA guidelines for sunscreen claims recently changed?

Previous FDA rules on sunscreens dealt almost exclusively with protection against sunburn, which is primarily caused by ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation from the sun. They did not address ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation, which contributes to skin cancer and early skin aging.

Because of that, the FDA established a “broad spectrum” test for determining a sunscreen’s UVA protection. Passing the broad-spectrum test shows the product provides UVA protection that is proportional to its UVB protection. Sunscreen products that pass the broad-spectrum test are allowed to be labeled as “Broad Spectrum.” These sunscreens protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

Why is this important?

Scientific data demonstrated that products that are “Broad Spectrum SPF 15 [or higher]” have been shown to reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging when used with other sun protection measures, in addition to helping prevent sunburn. Other sun protection measures include limiting time in the sun and wearing protective clothing.

For once, I agree with a change the FDA has made. As a melanoma survivor, I want to be sure I’m getting the best sunscreen protection possible without applying harmful chemicals to my skin.

If most sunscreens only protect against sunburn, but not skin cancer, what good is that doing me or anyone else for that matter?

Is TRUE Natural Meeting These Requirements?

Yes! True Natural introduced a new lineup of Broad Spectrum SPF 50 sunscreens that exceed the new FDA guidelines. True Natural’s new sunscreen formulas are all natural, 100% mineral based using nanoparticle-free (200nm+ zinc oxide). The end result is a sunscreen that is light, non-greasy and invisible on your skin (no joke)!

It’s easy to see whyTrue Natural SPF 50 Unscented Facial Sunscreen, SPF 50 Unscented Sunscreen Lotion and the SPF 40 Active Sunscreen receive top marks from EWG’s 2012 Beach & Sport Sunscreen review!

I have gotten to try the True Natural SPF 50:

  • Vanilla Coconut Facial Sunscreen
  • Vanilla Coconut Sunscreen Lotion
  • Baby & Sensitive Skin (Unscented) Sunscreen Lotion

I have been very happy with how they work! They blend in easily, and really don’t leave a thick white residue on your skin. The Vanilla Coconut scent smells so yummy and unscented is great for people with sensitive.

If you’re looking for a good sunscreen this summer, I highly recommend True Natural!

The Giveaway

One lucky reader will win one True Natural Facial Sunscreen and one Body Sunscreen Lotion (choice of unscented or Vanilla Coconut; $39.90 value). To enter, simply complete the Rafflecopter form below!

I love their education section. Checked out the article on the FDA’s new labeling. Wish the FDA would get a better handle of food labeling as well!

I learned they have a natural and vegan self tanner. Awesome as I burn easy, loath tanning beds and would like to be a tad darker with out the UV rays anyway. I also love that the products are cruelty-free!

Vanilla — coconut in a small travel size. This SPF 50 facial sunscreen provides powerful sun protection, but is safe and gentle enough for the whole family. Non-nano zinc is used to effectively block harmful UVA and UVB rays. Organic plant ingredients support and nurture skin. Goes on clear and non-greasy.
