I prefer wearing tinted lip balm over lipstick, so I learned how to make my own. It’s more affordable than store bought and I can control the ingredients.

The base of all natural chapstick ingredients were chosen for their ability to moisturize and soften lips… and it works! We use mica powder to tint our lip balm because it’s pretty and shimmery, and available in lots of great colors.

Feel free to substitute another essential oil for peppermint oil. And if you have a sensitivity to coconut oil, you can choose another carrier oil like sweet almond oil or jojoba oil.

Supplies

Tools

  • 5 empty chapstick tubes
  • Double Boiler
  • Craft sticks
  • Essential oil dropper

Instructions

  • Measure out your beeswax, Shea butter and coconut oil, then add it to your double boiler pan, stirring constantly until all of your ingredients have melted.
(If you don't have a double boiler, you can fit a glass bowl or measuring cup into a pan of hot water.)
Beeswax and coconut oil in a glass measuring cup with pink mica on the white wood table next to it
  • Remove the pan from heat, then mix in your vitamin E oil and peppermint essential oil.
  • Dip the end of your craft stick into your mica powder adding just a pinch of mica powder (a little goes a long way) and stir into the mixture until it’s fully dissolved.
Pinkish red mica stirred into the melted lip balm mixture in a glass measuring cup
  • Carefully pour your melted ingredients into your chapstick tubes and let set for about 30 minutes until the chapstick hardens up. I like to use a dropper for mess free pouring, but it’s best to use disposable droppers as they’re really hard to clean out.

  • Once completely cooled, place the caps on your tinted lip balm and they're ready to use.
