ERGObaby Performance Carrier Review

I received a gently used organic ERGObaby carrier around the time Kaylee was born. I used it all the time until I left it on the floor, and Brian accidentally stepped on it and broke the waist buckle (he has a heavy foot). So I was thrilled to have the chance to test out their new Performance Carrier.

We spend a lot of time outdoors since we live in a beautiful mountain town next to a lake. If I know we’re going to be out in the heat for long periods of time, I like to have a carrier with me that I know will breathe so I don’t feel like I’m wearing my own personal heater.

The ERGObaby Performance Carrier is great for outdoors activities! The outer layer of the carrier is made from high-performance Ripstop water-repellant polyester. I was surprised by how soft the fabric is. It seems to conform nicely to the girls’ bodies.

The carrier’s lining is made from mesh in the Charcoal and Blue models to provide extra wicking (I have the Charcoal). Whereas the Gray and Green models have a 100% cotton lining that is also designed to be moisture wicking (just not as much).

The stitching is also heavy duty. It’s reinforced at all fabric intersections for extra durability and at critical intersections in the interior for added safety.

Additionally, the Performance Carrier is super lightweight (at only 1.21 pounds), so I don’t mind wearing it buckled around my waist in anticipation of one of the girls wanting to be worn while we’re out.

I like that the sleep hood is also made of the same water-repellant fabric as the body of the carrier. Kaylee loves to hide under it when the sun is too bright, or when she’s just not feeling social. It’s very adjustable, so it should fit just about any child you might want to carry.

The hood has its own little zippered pocket for storage, but there’s quite a bit of space in that pouch, so if you’re not using the hood, you can easily stash a couple small belongings in it too.

There’s another large zippered pocket just to the right of the hood storage compartment that holds quite a bit. I’m sure you could stash a diaper and wipes in there in addition to your phone, keys and a small wallet.

One of the features I really love in this carrier is how padded the shoulder straps are (there’s nothing worse than straps that dig into your shoulders). The Performance Carrier’s shoulder straps are padded with 1” high-density premium foam, and expand from 27” to 49” in length.

The waist strap is also lightly padded with 1/4” high-density EVA foam, and expands from 23.6” to 51.18” in length. I love that the waist buckle has the extra security loop as an added safety feature.

It’s a very comfortable carrier for both parent and child. The design ensures that your child’s weight is evenly distributed between your shoulders and hips, so you’re always comfortable. It will fit adults who are 5’ to 6’5” tall, depending upon body type.

Because you can only use the ERGObaby Performance Carrier in the inward facing position, it properly supports your child’s hips, pelvis and spine. It’s designed to be used with a wide range of ages and weights, from 7 to 45 pounds.

You can use the carrier for front, back and hip carrying. I’ve gotten so comfortable with the back carry (and the girls love to be front carried) that I haven’t tried hip carrying yet. That’s next on my list.

There is also a wide range of compatible accessories that ERGObaby offers. I got to try the Cargo pack, which snaps right under the large zippered pocket and velcros to the waistband so it’s very secure. You could easily stash 2 water bottles and all of the snacks you need for a hike in it.

Overall, I love this carrier. It’s comfortable and durable, and will be one of my go-to carriers for long walks and hikes during the warm summer months!

Be sure to check out the ERGObaby Performance Carrier and connect with ERGObaby on Facebook and Twitter.

  2. Amy Bailey says

One of my FAV carriers!! Great to put on fast. The ONLY downfall is that they aren’t good for toddlers as the back support is often not high enough. :(

  3. Natalie says

I love my Ergo! I love that I can carry the baby and then just slip it to the back and carry my 2 year old instead! Very versatile and comfortable! It is the first carrier I’ve used that doesn’t leave me with a back ache!

We have baby #2 on the way and would LOVE another Ergo so we can carry both our babies around (baby #1 isn’t really ready to give us up yet!).

This looks awesome! And look at how happy she looks in it! I love that it goes to 45 lbs since my son is pretty large (2 yo and 40 lbs) and that it also still allows for a 7 lbs baby to use it too! It would work great for after I have the baby in Oct.

Ergos are the BEST carriers! Granted, I haven’t tried them all, but I’m in love with ours. I wish it were a bit more breathable, because I always end up super hot in it when carrying my hot natured baby around, but it’s still extremely comfortable.

these look & sound great!! i love that it is so lightweight and breathable, and ergo carriers in general sound like they’re super comfy and durable! i love the cargo pack option.. that would be fabulous for hikes when i try to snap a messenger-esque bag around me to carry all of our snacks & water in whilst carrying my son on my back as well.. oi!! it really is a unwieldy load!! :D thanks so much for the great review!

  16. Kimberly says

I have a different type of Ergo and I love it, especially when my son was very young. The only problem I have with it is that the hip carry was very uncomfortable; it put a lot of weight on my neck/shoulder.

  17. jamie Davis says

I love that it has moisture wick fabric. I also love that it will be fit my short frame, I’m 5’ tall.

  18. Rebecca Wood says

Sounds like a really great carrier! I’ve been wanting to try one for a while now. I love all the storage in this one, and how padded the shoulder straps are. I also really like that can only be used inward facing so their little hips are always fully supported. The moisture wicking fabric is really great too. There are so many great features of this carrier! Now, if I can just convince the hubs to get me one…

  19. Sandy Chiang says

i heard that the Ergo baby carrier aren’t as good for short mommies. Not sure if it’s true since i haven’t tried it on myself.

  26. Ashley B says

Hubby has the Ergo Sport (it was a shower gift for HIM) and I keep steeling it but I would LOVE this one. I like all the storage a lot (since I have my hands full with the twins, even in a carrier, sometimes it’s hard to get to a purse). Ergos are AMAZING

  27. Alison says

I have an older model Ergo and I love it! Would love to get my hands on a newer one so my husband could carry our 3 year old while I carry our 8 month old!

  30. Jill M says

I love our Ergo. It is so much more comfortable and supportive than a Bjorn. My one challenge was getting comfortable snapping it in the back, once the baby is inside. It took a couple tries before I could do it quickly. But I love it!

  31. Melissa Shoaf says

I love how broad the weight range is, I could wear my 3 year old or my 2 year old, and then turn around and wear my 3 month old! awesome! I also love how much storage space there is. If you could truly fit a diaper and wipes in there, then the manufacturers are doing it right!

  32. Samantha Herrmann says

I love that this carrier holds kids up to 45 pounds! And that the shoulder pads are thicker to provide more comfort!

  33. judi says

I have a regular Ergo. My whole family loves it! Seriously, I have 7 kids. My older boys (ages 14, 12, 10 and 8) all wear their baby sister (7 months) and 3 year old brother in it! It’s a great carrier!

  37. Callie says

I love our ergo. I just wore my 3 month old when we went on a 1 1/2 mile family hike at Mt. St. Helens. He slept the whole time.

I got my ErgoBaby performance last mother’s day when my daughter was 2 months old. She lived in it for the next 3 months and we still use it. She now goes onto my back and loves playing with my hair. She traveled all around Maui in it for her first birthday. We recommend our ErgoBaby to EVERYONE!!!

  39. Renea Pike says

This is the carrier I want! I had a Beco with my last baby, and was in love. Now we have moved to Vegas, and I could not imagine wearing any carrier with tons of hot fabric next to my body for a long period of time, this sounds perfect!

  55. Erin S says

I love the idea of having a place on the carrier for storage! Not only for hiking, but I could just throw my wallet in there for the store! Love it!

  56. Lindsay says

I loved the Ergo, and really wanted to get one, but it didn’t fit quite right for front carry. :( I’m curious if I could use one for a back carry, because I really like them!

  63. Ashley C says

I have always wanted to try and ergo but have never had the extra money to spend on such an expensive carrier. I love that this carrier is made to hold their hips in the proper place and not be a “crotch dangler”. Plus, how awesome is it that its so breathable!? My moby can get super toasty even in the house!

  64. Lynn B says

This sounds like the ideal carrier for hiking, especially with the extra pouch! I’m learning that breathability is so important with a carrier, especially in this hot summer we’re having.

  65. Nicole S says

I LOVE my Organic Ergo, but it does get a little sweaty in there sometimes. It’s nice that this one is more breathable.

  66. Beth Ann says

I absolutely love Ergo! It’s nice and strong, yet soft and flexible. This is basically the perfect carrier! <3

  67. says

Great review! I’m loving the cargo pouch on this performance Ergo. I also like that it can be worn on adults up to 6’5″. My husband is 6’4″ and hardly anything baby related, think strollers and such, are made for anyone that tall. :) This would make for a great carrier for my family.

Hello! I know this post is from a year ago, but I just thought I’d ask…Do you know if the grey and green / charcoal and blue still made with different materials where you said mesh lining vs cotton? Also, any opinion on “scratchiness” of the shoulder pad material? I’ve read some other review and some mention it, some don’t. I will be wearing w/ sleeveless a lot, so I’m curious. Thanks!
