I love traveling. It has always been in my heart to travel. Even when I was a child, I had dreams of seeing the world. I have done some traveling, but not near as much as I’d like to.
Now that the girls are a bit older, I’m dreaming up family travel plans. We spent a year in Uruguay together, which was amazing. I’d love to do something similar in a couple years, but in Europe this time. I love soaking up other cultures.
In the meantime of dreaming of big trips, we like to take a lot of shorter road trips together. We visit San Diego, Orange County and Las Vegas a lot. All of those drives are only 2-3 hours away, which is great with young kids. We're actually planning a road trip to Las Vegas next week!
Some months we go out of town 2-3 times, so I work hard to try and incorporate our healthy lifestyle as much as I can. I feel so much better when we return from a trip and we didn’t indulge in a lot of unhealthy behavior.
Here are my top 7 tips for planning a healthy family vacation:
Pack Healthy Snacks
We are always sure to pack plenty of healthy snacks for our road trips. If we don’t, the girls are begging for snacks as soon as we leave the house and we have to stop and grab something easy. I’ve made that mistake more than once, so now I bring more snacks then I think we’ll need.
Skip the Electronics
If you want to keep your vacation on the healthy side, try and keep electronics use to a minimum. Leave the computers and tablets at home and grab a book instead of turning on the TV. You mind and stress levels will thank you for it.
Plan Outdoor Activities
Making sure to plan activities that will get your body moving is a great way to plan a healthy vacation. Take a hike, ride a bike by the water or go swimming. It’ll help keep you from coming home with an extra 10 pounds on your hips.
Plan an Educational Activity
Stimulating your mind an important health consideration. When planning out your travel agenda, pencil in an activity that will teach your family something new. Some ideas include taking a class or visiting a new museum.
Schedule in Down Time
It’s easy to over pack your schedule when you’re planning a vacation. Do yourself a vacation and make sure you have down time in your schedule. Being able to unwind and relax is an important factor in planning a healthy vacation.
Pack the Essential Oils
It never fails. When I forget to pack the essential oils, someone gets an upset stomach or has trouble sleeping. I am sure to always back the basic necessities even if it’s a short trip. It’s the best way for us to avoid needing to pick up any over the counter meds.
Choose a Vacation Rental
Did you know July is National Vacation Rental Month? If you haven’t stayed in a vacation rental before, then you’re missing out. They offer so much more space and privacy than a hotel room. Plus they usually have a full kitchen, living room, bedrooms and even a washer and dryer. It’s like being at home while on vacation.
I really like the idea of having a kitchen in my vacation rental. I have to avoid gluten and my daughter has to avoid sugar, so the conveniences of a kitchen is a huge benefit for us. Plus it’s so much more affordable to cook your own meals compared to eating out for every meal. My girls eat constantly, so I love the idea of having a fridge to keep fresh fruit in.
I also love being able to have separate living spaces. For my vacation downtime, I don’t want to be squeezed into a tiny hotel room with the rest of the family. When you have a living room and separate bedrooms, everyone can escape to their own corner for quiet time.
While there are many places you can find vacation rentals, Wyndham Vacation Rentals is a great choice for vacation rentals because you also get amenities like you would at a hotel. Depending upon the property, you may have access to a shuttle service, a concierge desk and housekeeping. I love those little extra perks that Wyndham Vacation Rentals offers.
Wyndham Vacation Rentals has a ton of locations that support living a healthy lifestyle too. They have properties in beach and mountain towns, so you can be assured there will be plenty of outdoor activities to support your active lifestyle.
Another benefit of booking your vacation rental with Wyndham Vacation Rentals is their Vacation Rental Bill of Rights. This industry-first service pledge from Wyndham Vacation Rentals tells you they’re there for you before, during and after your stay. It’s so important to know you’re going to receive good service!
