I was 22 when I joined a gym for the first time. My membership came with a personal trainer for 8 sessions, which was invaluable to getting me off on a good start. There’s nothing like having an appointment you have to keep to help you build good habits.
I feel like I need a kick in the pants to hold myself accountable to getting back in shape, so the timing was perfect when Trainerly contacted me about their new online personal training service.
It’s very easy to create an account – you can even do it with your Facebook account so you don’t have to remember a user name and password. All you need is a computer, a webcam and speakers to get started.
Trainerly even treats all new members to a free, no-obligation 30-minute assessment session. I signed up for one right away. I did have a little mix-up on time zones, but the customer support staff helped me out and we got another session set up for me at the right time zone.
You get to choose which trainer you’ll work with. I went with Angie Kemp. I felt drawn to her profile because she’s also a mom, she’s a teacher and she has a “fun and friendly” / “motivator” training style.
While we had some troubles getting my webcam to work properly at first, she was very patient with me and stayed on longer than our scheduled time so we could have our full 30 minutes of workout time.
We did what is called a Tabata style workout, which is 20 seconds of activity and 10 seconds of rest. Angie chose this format for me because it’s great for all fitness levels, especially beginners and those getting back into shape, because the recovery time is like a little recharge for the next set.
For the workout, I needed to have 2 dumbbells. I had 8-pound dumbbells, but I wish I would have had a set of 5 pound dumbbells.
The workout was tough, but it moved so fast that it went by quickly. There was no time to stop and think about how hard the work was, just enough time to grab a sip of water.
It was really great to have Angie there live, where I could see exactly what she wanted me to do, and she could watch me and make sure I was doing it right. All the perks of having a personal trainer without having to get in my car and drive to the gym or find a sitter for the kids.
