You may have heard the term mindfulness a lot lately, but aren’t sure how to apply it to your daily life. Mindfulness is something that can be incorporated into any area of your life, including your fitness routine.
Today, I’m sharing my tips on how and why you should incorporate mindfulness in fitness in your life.
How to Practice Mindfulness in Fitness
To be mindful when you exercise, you need to keep your mind very present. Focus only on what you’re doing in that moment. Feel your muscles work. Move them slowly so you can really feel them. Notice how your body feels as you do different movements. Strive to be very present.
Notice each breath you take. Keep your breaths smooth and even and time them with the movements of your body. If you’ve taken a yoga class, you’ll understand the importance of breath. If you haven’t, give yoga a try. It’ll help to improve your ability to be mindful when you exercise.
Practicing yoga outside is a wonderful way to train your thoughts to be mindful.
I also like to incorporate mindfulness when I go for walks by the lake. Instead of listening to music, I listen carefully to all of the noises that are around me. I listen for the wind to blow, the birds to chirp and the leaves to rustle. It helps me connect with nature and be more mindful of my surroundings.

I find that when I am very mindful when I workout, I can go into an almost meditative trance. Since meditation has many health benefits, you can reap those reward while enjoying the benefits of exercise at the same time.

When you are paying very close attention to the movements of your body, you can have a more effective workout. You’ll find yourself adjusting your form and improving how your body works. This will lead to a more effective workout and increased benefits from your workouts.
A Happier Outlook
Studies show that people who practice mindfulness tend to have a happier outlook on life. By adding a mindfulness component to your fitness routine, you can enjoy the benefit of improving your mental state with the benefits of a stronger body.
