Over the weekend, Kaylee was dealing with some seasonal threats and her respiratory system needed some extra support. Poor baby! I decided to make a batch of homemade natural vapor rub that was full of wonderful natural ingredients that could support her body.
I have been stocking up on pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils over the last several months so I had everything on hand I needed.
I used a 4 oz jelly jar for this recipe, which makes a big batch of vapor rub, but it should last in your medicine cabinet for up to 2 years.
Natural Vapor Rub Ingredients
Directions for Homemade Vapor Rub
- Melt your palm shortening or coconut oil and pour it into the 4 oz jar. For this batch I used 5 tablespoons of palm shortening and 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, but any ratio would work. You can use any brand, but I like Tropical Traditions. The key is using oils that are solid at room temperature.
- Add the essential oils and stir.
- Place in the refrigerator for a couple hours until the mixture hardens.
- Store in a cool, dark place. I keep mine in the fridge. Next time I’ll add beeswax to make it more shelf stable.
How to Use Natural Vapor Rub for Respiratory Support
You can apply it directly to your chest and neck, and even put a little under your nose. Another great way to use it is to put it on the bottoms of your feet and then put socks on.
It seemed to help Kaylee maintain a feeling of clear airways and easy breathing almost immediately after we applied it. She smiled and sat down next to me to rest. She didn’t like having it put under her nose, so we’ve been sticking to the neck, chest and feet.
Update: This post previously had a link to the brand of essential oils I use, but I can no longer mention that brand on my blog due to FDA regulations. If you’d like to learn more about the only brand of essential oils I recommend, please fill out the form on this page and I’ll get back with you.
