Every day I find that it’s more difficult to keep Zoë entertained. She’s always looking to learn something new, even if that’s by challenging Brian and me by doing things she knows she’s not supposed to… typical toddler behavior.
So, we’ve been working on introducing new activities into her day. She is still at the stage where she puts everything in her mouth, so I haven’t wanted to let her play with playdough. They can say it’s non-toxic all they want; I’d prefer to know exactly what’s going into my daughter’s mouth.
That’s why I decided to go in search of a recipe for non-toxic playdough that I can make myself. I came across a very simple recipe on the Natural Parenting Tips site. It only took me a couple minutes to whip up and it kept Zoë entertained for about an hour.
And what’s best is you can probably make it with what you already have in your kitchen – and for much less than the stuff they sell at the store!
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of flour
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- ½ cup water
Directions:
- Place all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and knead until dough forms
- Add a little more water if you need to
Tips and Modifications:
- You can add food coloring or glitter to make this playdough more interesting for your toddler
- Keep your non-toxic playdough in a sealed container in the refrigerator, as this recipe doesn’t stay fresh for very long
If you try this non-toxic playdough recipe, let me know what you think!

Yes, it is always a challenge to think of ways to keep your child occupied. I used to fill my son's crib with a lot of toys he could easily reach for whenever he woke up from sleep. And because his toys were close by, for some reason, he rarely cried and instead started to make himself busy playing with them. Your Zoe seems to enjoy her "natural" playdough a lot. Nice one.

Zoe never really slept in a crib or I would have definitely given that a try! It's really nice when they entertain themselves for a while :-)
