Why I Switched to Rocky Mountain Essential Oils

When I’m asked where to buy essential oils, I always recommend Rocky Mountain Oils, and there are a few reasons why. Read my Rocky Mountain Essential Oils review to learn the reasons why they’re the best non-MLM oil company.

Several bottles of Rocky Mountain Essential Oils on a wood block.

When I first left the essential oil MLM company I was with, I knew I had to find an essential oil brand I could use with my family. There are so many impure oils out there, you really have to choose carefully. All I knew when I started searching was that it wouldn’t be another one of the MLM brands.

So I dove head first into researching where to buy essential oils that were pure and safe to use with my family, but didn’t require me to make a monthly order. After doing thorough research online, I narrowed it down to a few of the best essential oil brands that I wanted to try:

Each of these brands seemed to have good reviews, provide their testing data to prove they sell pure essential oils and have a reasonable price point. So I got a few bottles of the most popular essential oils from each of these essential oil companies to test out myself and make a decision.

Who Has the Best Essential Oils?

As a regular essential oil user, I spent months testing these brands to decide which one I liked best. The winning brand was Rocky Mountain Essential Oils by far, and they’re the brand I’ve stuck with for a few years now. That’s why I became an affiliate for them (what does that mean?).

They have the highest quality oils on the market today outside of the MLM companies (i.e., doTERRA and Young Living). That’s why I’m sharing this Rocky Mountain Oils review with you… so you can make an informed decision on the best essential oil company for your family.

What Makes Rocky Mountain Oils So Great?

There are a lot of reasons why I use Rocky Mountain Oils. They are not as affordably priced as Plant Therapy, but I feel the scent lasts longer and you get a greater value from the RMO oils even though they’re priced a bit higher.

RMO has a S.A.A.F.E. Promise, which in their words guarantees that their essential oils are what they say they are: 100% pure, natural and authentic. They even provide access to all of their GC/MS test results (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry) to prove it.

The company has really great customer service too if you need help with anything. They even offer a no-questions-asked, 90-day product return policy.

And if you’re into this sort of thing like I am, it’s run by a husband and wife team. I love supporting small family businesses over big conglomerates (Purity Coffee is another favorite family-owned business).

1. It’s really affordable to start.

The Essentials Kit from Rocky Mountain Essential Oils includes six 5ml bottles of popular oils.

I love that the Rocky Mountain Oils Starter Kit, which is called The Essentials Kit, has such an affordable price at only $24.95. It includes one 5 ml bottle of six of the most popular oils, including:

  1. Lavender
  2. Lemon
  3. Orange
  4. Peppermint
  5. Rosemary
  6. Tea Tree

This is a great variety to start with, although you’ll likely want to add more oils to your stash in the future. Since RMO has not only the standard 15 ml bottles, they also have the small size 5 ml bottles, it gives you more flexibility in trying new oils since you can make a smaller investment to start.

Some of my favorite single oils to use besides the ones in the starter kit are:

  1. Sandalwood
  2. Frankincense
  3. Lemongrass
  4. Ylang Ylang
  5. Rose

2. The oils go through extensive testing.

As part of their quality assurance process, Rocky Mountain does third party testing at an independent lab to ensure their purity standards are met. Before ordering, you can see these reports on the page for each essential oil.

If you have RMO oils already, you can grab the batch code from the bottom of the bottle and input the batch number you see on RMO’s GC/MS Tests Lookup page. That will give you all the testing data from the batch that bottle of oil came from.

In addition to the GC/MS testing, RMO also does standard Refractive Index and Organoleptic testing on all oils (you won’t find these reports listed for the oils though). So it makes sense why I liked these oils so much more than the other brands I tested.

3. Are they safe for internal use?

No, essential oils should not be used internally unless you’re under the care of a certified aromatherapist. Aromatic and topical use are the only safe ways of using essential oils.

The term “Therapeutic Grade” was made up by the MLM companies… it’s a marketing term that doesn’t actually mean anything. So please don’t ingest oils unless you’re under the care of a professional.

4. Do RMO oils have to be diluted?

Yes, as with all pure essential oil brands, you must properly dilute them with a carrier oil for topical application. If you’re new to this topic, please read my post on diluting essential oils with carrier oils, which includes a dilution guide and info about the properties of the various oils.

Rocky Mountain has most of the standard carrier oils. What I can’t get from them, I usually order from Mountain Rose Herbs.

5. Do they have organic essential oils?

Yes, Rocky Mountain does have organic oils available for 10 single essential oils. They cost just a bit more than the other oils, but it’s a great option to have. Just look for the organic label, which looks a bit different from the others.

6. Are their oils fair trade?

Some of the essential oils sold by Rocky Mountain Oils are Fair Trade Certified, but not all of them. Each oil that is fair trade is labeled, so you need to check each oil on the RMO website.

7. Does RMO have free shipping?

Rocky Mountain Essential Oils are shipped in cardboard tubes to prevent breakage.

Yes! I love that they have a low minimum order for free shipping – only $25. And even though essential oils come in glass bottles, I’ve never received a broken one. They’re all packed really well.

8. Does Rocky Mountain Oils have a Rewards Program?

Yes, their rewards program is called Oil’ty. I love it because I can earn rewards for each of my orders, but I don’t have to order regularly to be a member. Even better, it’s free to sign up for it.

If you want to save even more money on your oils, you can set up a Subscribe and Save Shipment to save up to 15% more on your monthly order.

9. Are they sold on Amazon?

Yes, full transparency, you can buy Rocky Mountain Oils on Amazon. However, you will not get the benefits of RMO’s loyalty rewards program or their regular specials.

There’s also no guarantee that you’re receiving authentic essential oils when you buy on Amazon, so I always recommend buying direct. As a bonus, Rocky Mountain has great customer service too!

10. How to find comparable essential oil blends?

If you have a favorite essential oil blend, Rocky Mountain has actually put together a great page that compares blends to help you find its equivalent.

For example, the Immune Strength blend is a similar product to doTERRA’s OnGuard or Young Living’s Thieves blends. Just check out the comparison page to find your favorite blend.

11. What do you do with essential oils?

If you have high quality oils and a handful of other raw materials, you can make so many natural products for your home. Here are some of my favorite uses:

12. Do they have skincare products?

If you don’t want to make your own DIY Beauty Products, Rocky Mountain has a line of good quality skincare products with a mostly natural ingredient list.

13. What about accessories?

You can get most of the relevant accessories for using essential oils from Rocky Mountain Oils as well, including diffusers.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for with RMO’s accessories, the second place I always check out Your Oil Tools. They have a huge selection of accessories to help you put your EOs to use.

14. Do they have fragrance oils?

No, fragrance oils are different than essential oils, and RMO doesn’t carry them. If you want a good company for your fragrance oil order, try Nature’s Oils.

15. More Essential Oil Reviews?

As someone who always does tons of research, I can respect if you’d like to read more reviews before making up your mind. I suggest reading more reviews of Rocky Mountain Oils on their Fan Reviews page.

I hope this review of Rocky Mountain’s Essential Oils helps you understand why they’re the only oils I use with my family. Please let me know if you have any questions about these quality oils in the comments!
