Every day when I pick my girls up from school, it seems the first thing out of their mouths is, “I’m hungry. I want some after school snacks.” They eat a good breakfast every morning and I pack them a good sized lunch and snack for school. If they don’t get to eat after school snacks right away, they sure do get cranky! And when they are cranky, I get cranky too. Can you relate?
Since I know that having after school snacks is a critical part of making our afternoons run smoothly, I try to always have snacks on hand to make our lives easier. Of course, I try to make our snacks as healthy and nutritious as possible, but sometimes I like to sneak a “treat” in there too.
If you’re looking for some healthy and nutritious after school snacks your kids will love, here are some of our favorites.
Apple Slices with Peanut Butter
This is such a yummy and filling after school snack. I cut the apple into slices, then arrange them into a flower shape and plop some peanut butter in the middle. Making the presentation pretty makes the snack even more fun for kids.
Banana with Raw Honey and Oatmeal
This is one of the after school snacks that my husband introduced me to when our kids were young. You start by slicing the banana up. Then you drizzle honey over it and sprinkle some oats over the honey. It gives it a nice sweet taste and good texture. The kids love it.
Hummus with Veggie Sticks
This after school snack is super simple, but oh so tasty! During the summer months when we have a Farmer’s Market in town, there’s one vendor with the most amazing hummus made from sprouted chick peas. We go through so much of it! There is one sun dried tomato hummus that pairs exceptionally well with cucumbers. Find a hummus that has flavors in it your child likes and pair it with their favorite veggies.
Cheese and Crackers with Grapes
My girls love platters of food for after school snacks. We like to slice up a few different types of cheeses with a couple different types of crackers (and sometimes some nitrate free salami) and put them out on a platter. Grapes make a nice sweet complement to the cheese and crackers too!
One of the reasons I love giving the girls pistachios so much is because they are a time occupier. I can give them a small bag of pistachios and it will keep them busy for an hour. It’s great for days where they don’t have any homework, and I still have work to finish up. You can get the same effect with shelled peanuts and sunflower seeds too.
I love popping up a big bowl of organic popcorn on the stove for the girls. If they have gotten their homework done early for the week and they don’t have dance, we’ll get a family-friendly movie and sit on the couch and snuggle and eat some popcorn. We pop our own popcorn in coconut oil and usually sprinkle cheese powder, garlic, salt and pepper on it for a yummy savory flavor.
Fisher Nut Exactly Snack Bites
Sometimes we’re not able to come home for an after school snack before dance, so I need to have things that are portable that I can just grab and bring with us. Recently we got to sample Fisher Nut Exactly snack bites.
If you haven’t tried them yet, they’re a combination of roasted nuts and whole grain popcorn, rolled into a bite-sized snack that’s dipped in milk chocolate, dark chocolate, peanut butter or salted caramel. I like that they come in a re-sealable bag so we aren’t tempted to eat the whole bag and we don’t make a mess when we’re on the go.
The new varieties available at retailers nationwide include Almond Popcorn Dipped in Milk Chocolate, Almond Popcorn Dipped in Dark Chocolate, Pecan Popcorn Dipped in Salted Caramel and Peanut Popcorn Dipped in Peanut Butter. We have tried all of the flavors except salted caramel and they’re all really yummy! I love the combination of sweet and salty flavors.
Zoë’s favorite flavor is the Peanut Popcorn Dipped in Peanut Butter. Brian and I liked those too.
Kaylee’s favorite is the Almond Popcorn Dipped in Dark Chocolate. She was munching on her favorite Fisher Nut Exactly snack bites flavor while she did her homework. Nothing like a little chocolate to give her extra motivation to get her homework done. And she got all of it done 2 days before it was due. I guess the motivation worked!
I would put Fisher Nut Exactly snack bites into our “treat” category, but they only make it onto that list because there are no artificial preservatives in them. If you’re counting calories, each snack bite only has 15-16 calories in it, so portion control is pretty easy. Zoë, my little label reader, noted that there’s about 1 gram of sugar in each bite.
