When people see our girls eat, they are always astonished by what good eaters they both are. They eat the same foods we do at every meal, and don’t typically choose typical “kid” foods when we go out to eat.
It took a lot of work to get there. We worked really hard to be sure they didn’t develop into picky eaters. I promise that they both tried and we fought many battles to get to where we are.
One of the things that has really helped our girls to enjoy eating most all foods is that we’ve always gotten them involved in food preparation. They’ve been helping in the kitchen since they were big enough to hold a mixing spoon.
When kids are involved with food preparation, they’re much more likely to taste new foods. And remember, just because they taste it once and say they don’t like it doesn’t mean you stop offering it. Kids need to try foods ten times before they know if they like them or not. If you’re persistent enough, most kids will like most foods.
I know that sometimes, as parents, we’re not persistent enough about things like picky eating when our kids are toddlers and by the time they’re school aged, it feels like it’s too late. It’s not. Your kids will eat what they’re given. You just have to be more strong willed than they are.
There is still time time to encourage healthy eating choices in your children. Get them in the kitchen and get them helping you. Seriously, they’re so much more likely to eat foods they helped to prepare.
Another challenge I know many parents face is getting their kids to eat foods that aren’t slathered in their favorite condiments. Unfortunately, many of those condiments are full of so much added sugar! Maple syrup, strawberry jam, ketchup… there are so many yummy condiments that just aren’t the healthiest choice for us!

Eating together is a really fun way to bond with your kiddos. The girls and I have always had fun mealtime traditions together. It made the times when Daddy traveled a lot a bit more fun.
The girls are 8 and 10 now, and cook themselves breakfast most days, but I still try to make some mornings fun. So when Brian was at snowboard camp, the girls and I had an art breakfast!
Zoë cooked up a batch of oatmeal and we got out our Noshi Food Paint to get creative. I love starting the day off with a creative activity, so we got to kill two birds with one stone – creativity and breakfast.
We had a lot of fun creating and giggling together. I cherish these moments with my daughters.
