I participated in a campaign on behalf of Influence Central for the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.
During my first pregnancy, I did what many moms do – I set out to make sure I had every last thing that a new parent needs. We had a fully decked out nursery. We stocked up on diapers and we had every new fangled contraption that we thought me might possibly need.
A lot of research went into these purchases before I made a decision about what brand I wanted. At the time, I didn't have anyone I could connect with that shared similar ideals, so I did a lot of research online. I joined birth boards and groups, and tried to learn as much as I could from people that were like minded.
I learned that I absolutely wanted to babywear, and that I specifically wanted a Moby Wrap (I will still never understand how it took me over a month to finally use and fall in love with that thing!). I learned I only wanted to use natural products on my precious baby to keep her safe, and discovered the only brand I wanted to use was Earth Mama Angel Baby.
These are recommendations I never would have gotten from people I knew in real life. I really found connecting with others online to be priceless. It's hard to imagine how different things might be if I hadn't forged my own path.
Of course, all of this research didn't stop me from making the detrimental mistake of thinking we needed far more than we did! Over the first few months, we quickly realized most of the baby gear wasn't an absolute necessity.
So during my second pregnancy, we really limited what we purchased and kept on hand. We discovered all we really needed was clothes, diapers, some baby personal care products, a baby carrier and a place for the baby to sleep and to hang out during the day when she wasn't being held or worn (she loved her bouncy seat).
Of course, every family is different, but keeping it simple really made life so much easier for us! If you're a new or soon-to-be new parent, then you're probably out there researching like I was. A great place to research the safety of baby products is JPMA’s Baby Safety Zone website.
If you aren't familiar with the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA), they have been helping to make safety recommendations for baby products for 35 years. Their certification process ensures the safety of baby products, so you can feel confident trusting the safety of a product when you see their seal. They even have a free guide for baby product safety, selection and use as well as a community where you can connect with other parents.
If you're just starting out on your parenting journey, I definitely recommend checking out online resources like the Baby Safety Zone website.
