This last year has been a crazy one for me. My health seemed to be spiraling out of control, and my emotions with it. Not knowing what is going on with your body can make for a wild ride.
After 8 months of waiting, I finally got the Neurocardiogenic Syncope diagnosis. It was a relief to have something manageable rather than a something degenerative like MS (which is what they originally thought I might have). It wasn’t just that 8 months that was hard though, my health had been on the decline for a few years. It just took me a while to get to the point where I decided to stand up and demand an answer.
The thing is, I really wish I hadn’t waited so long. I could have saved myself (and my family) a lot of agony by making the decision to take control of my health sooner. If you’re having any health issues, I challenge you to stand up and take charge of your destiny. For me, knowing was more than half the battle. Now that I have answers, I have put together plans and started taking action.
One of the biggest action steps I have taken is to get fit again. My 25-year old self would not be happy with me if she saw how much I’d let my fitness decline. So I joined a gym and I’ve been working out regularly. I love lifting weights and getting on the elliptical, but I also love yoga. My gym has a few yoga classes each week, and they’re 1.5 hours long so it’s a good solid workout.
There are so many benefits to practicing yoga! Seriously, it’s so amazing. It is a practice that seems really hard in the beginning, but once you get into a routine is can change your life!
Some of the benefits of practicing yoga include improving:
- Stress and tension management
- Positive outlook on life
- Mental focus
- Sleep quality
- Muscle strength and tone
- Posture and balance
- Respiration, energy and vitality
- Balanced metabolism
- Weight loss
- Cardiovascular, adrenal, nervous system and circulatory health
- Bone health
- Blood pressure and blood sugar
- Athletic performance
- Injury protection
As you can see, it affects every area of your life! And it specifically addresses many of the symptoms of my autonomic disorder, including blood pressure, sleep, focus, circulation and more. It truly is an amazing practice that everyone should get involved with!
What Do You Need to Get Started?
If you want to give yoga a try, it’s really best to start with a class where an instructor can help correct your posture. Most gyms offer yoga classes now, and there are specialized studios that offer many different types of yoga as well.
If you’re not ready to practice at a studio or gym, you can also start your practice at home. There are plenty of DVDs to choose from, and many streaming services like Gaiam TV are also an option.
After you decide where you’ll practice yoga, you’ll need appropriate attire and a yoga mat. Other accessories like blocks are nice, but not necessary.
Once you start practicing yoga, it’s a good time to address any dietary changes you should make. Be sure to stay extra hydrated since yoga will detoxify your body and you just might sweat more than you expect!
One beverage I like to grab after a good yoga class is POM Wonderful’s POM Coconut (a combination of pomegranate juice and coconut water). It’s super hydrating and tasty too! The store right next to my gym carries it, so I often go in and pick one up after my yoga class before I head home to get back to work.
This year, I’m super focused on becoming #CrazyHealth, and POM Wonderful is just one component of that goal!
