I’m always looking for creative games and activities to do with the girls. It’s especially hard to find outdoor activities for us to do during the winter since it does get so cold (and snowy).
We have plenty of plastic games and toys, but I have a personal preference toward toys and games made from wood and other natural materials. So when I hear about KOOB The Viking Game, I wanted to learn more.
KOOB The Viking Game is an outdoor game that has recently taken Scandinavia by storm. I was curious why it’s called The Viking Game… Legend has it that the Vikings used to play it and hence the name.
It’s appropriate for both adults and children since it mixes strategy and hand eye coordination. It’s great for family get-togethers, BBQs, birthday parties, camping and beach trips. It is most often played on grass, but it can also be played on sand, concrete or even snow – so it’s a game that can be played outdoors year-round. KOOB can also played indoors in large areas such as gymnasiums, sports halls, barns, etc. (I would not recommend playing it in small indoor spaces.)
KOOB is easy to learn but will challenge anyone ages 5 and older in addition to promoting exercise and developing motor skills. I really like that the game is completely manufactured in Canada from local, untreated hardwood (white birch), and no chemicals or preservatives are used in the process, allowing for a completely natural product. I like to buy USA-made products, but Canada is typically my second choice.
While KOOB is recommended for ages 5 and up, I played KOOB with Zoë (4 in May) and it went well. I was thrilled that she knocked one of the pegs over on her first turn. It gave her confidence and she enjoyed playing the game from the start. I’m looking forward to Kaylee being a little older and able to play with us.
The game is really easy to setup and play, and I love that it comes with a carrying bag, which will make it easy to bring down to the park this summer.
While I love that we can play it in the snow, I don’t like being out in the cold for too long, so I know we’ll enjoy playing KOOB this summer when it’s warmer.
If you’re looking for a fun game made from natural materials to entertain your family, check out KOOB The Viking Game.
