Do you own a Tempurpedic mattress or are you thinking about buying one? Please stop and read our story about mold before you make that purchase!
If you’re reading this post, I have to assume that you are either thinking about buying a TempurPedic Mattress or you already own one. Am I right?
If you’re thinking about buying one – DON’T DO IT! Stop right now, turn away and don’t even consider buying a TempurPedic mattress – or any memory foam mattress for that matter.
If you already own a TempurPedic mattress, take it to the dump and get a new one as soon as you can. If you can’t get a new mattress just yet, you’re going to want to finish reading this entire story.
I want to share our story so that you can avoid making the same mistake. And, boy was buying a TempurPedic mattress a big mistake!
You may have read that memory foam mattresses like the ones made by TempurPedic emit toxic fumes, but did you know they’re a huge mold risk too? Neither did I – until it happened to us.
How We Fell in Love with a TempurPedic Mattress
Okay, here’s the deal. Brian and I bought our first TempurPedic mattress when we first moved in together. We loved that mattress and adored sleeping on it every single night until we sold it so we could spend some time in South America.
Keep in mind this was before we started our natural living journey and we had absolutely no clue that memory foam mattresses are toxic. All we knew was that it was comfortable and we loved it.
So when we returned to the US, we got another TempurPedic mattress, this time used.
Time for a Wake Up Call
It was about the time that our girls were getting too big for toddler beds and too big to sleep in our room every night that I started learning about mattresses and the risks that most of them carry.
I was horrified to find out that memory foam mattresses are pretty much the most toxic mattress you can choose.
Why, you ask?
Well, memory foam mattresses emit toxic VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and contain other toxic ingredients. The release of VOCs can result in allergic reactions as well as possible long-term complications.
Out of the 18 VOCs that require a label, several of them could potentially interfere with your endocrine system, hormones and other bodily functions.
One of the most toxic VOCs that is emitted from TempurPedic mattresses is formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen. You won’t find a list of ingredients used in memory foam mattresses – that’s a trade secret.
Honestly, I was angry when I read about how toxic memory foam mattresses are. I was sick to my stomach thinking that I allowed my babies to sleep on that mattress. How dare any company put me in that position?
I decided that we definitely needed a new mattress. We got the girls a non-toxic mattress first since they were sleeping in their own room.
Then it was time for us to get a new mattress. I shared more about the mattress we chose in this post, but for now I want to tell you the story of what we found under our TempurPedic mattress when we went to remove it and replace it with our new mattress.
We Found Mold on Our Tempurpedic Mattress
It pains me to say this but we found MOLD! Lots and lots of mold.
How did that even happen? I mean, we live in a very dry climate where mold typically isn’t a problem. Then I hopped online and my heart sank.
I Googled “Tempurpedic mold problem” and I couldn’t believe my eyes.
Entry after entry about mold growing on TempurPedic mattresses. Photo after photo documenting the same horror we had just discovered.
Didn’t they advertise TempurPedic mattresses as being antimicrobial when we bought ours? How can a mattress be antimicrobial and grow mold?
Seriously, how could this be happening to us?
It turns out it has happened to a lot of people. Far more than I could have imagined. So many, in fact, that they came together and filed a a class action lawsuit in California against TempurPedic, which was unfortunately unsuccessful. Not because there wasn’t enough evidence, but because the judge decided these should be individual lawsuits because each person’s complaint was unique and personal.
How did I miss that?
I am so grateful that we had a wonderful organic mattress (which we love, by the way) on its way when we made the discovery.
But I can’t help but wonder if many of my health problems were caused or at least aggravated by sleeping with mold every night for who knows how long.
So, what can you do if you already own a Tempurpedic mattress?
Here Are My Thoughts…
Ditch that mattress as soon as you can. I understand that new mattresses are a big expense, but how much will it cost you if your health is affected by mold?
If it’s not something you can do right away, go into your bedroom and turn over your TempurPedic mattress right now. Inspect it for mold.
From what I’ve seen, the mold always grows on the underside so you would never know about it unless you are moving your mattress.
If you’re lucky and there is no mold growing on your mattress yet, check that thing every single month until you can replace it.
Also, make sure it’s not on a solid surface. From what I read, having your TempurPedic mattress on a solid foundation will make it more likely to grow mold. Make sure that air can flow to the bottom.
It doesn’t matter if you live in the desert where the air is very dry. It can happen to you just like it happened to us no matter where you live.
If you flip your mattress and find mold, get that mattress out of your house right away. Seriously, don’t think twice, get it outside.
Brian slept on an air mattress and I slept on the couch for a week before we were able to get the new mattress set up. But I was not about to sleep on a moldy mattress for one more night.
If you live in California and you own a Tempurpedic mattress, check with the attorney handling the class action lawsuit, even if you don’t have mold. The lawsuit is focused on the VOC emissions.
If you’re not in California, check to see if there is a similar suit in your state or consider starting one.
We need to stand up to TempurPedic and other mattress manufacturers and make sure they know it’s not okay to sell mattresses that omit VOCs.
And it’s definitely not okay to sell mattresses that have a high tendency to grow mold. Our health and safety matter.
I hope reading our story can help you avoid the same mistake we made in purchasing a Tempurpedic mattress. If you’re curious what we’re sleeping on now, it’s a Naturepedic EOS mattress. We love it!
