Spring is here and avid gardeners everywhere are starting to prepare their gardens for planting. At my house, we’re preparing the soil to plant. We have a short growing season, so we have to take advantage of every moment of sunshine we get!
This year, we will be container gardening, which is always a great idea for renters in case you decide to move mid-season. It’s also a great idea if the soil in your area is less than hospitable.
Many people use plastic containers for their gardens, but another great option is Smart Pots. These fabric pots offer a new approach to outdoor container gardening. They are designed to allow aeration of the plant’s roots, which helps root growth and makes it easier to transplant them later.
In their tests, Smart Pots found that potatoes, strawberries, herbs and annuals all grow better when the container they are in allows the plant to aerate and root prune. They discovered that they could grow plants that were very difficult to grow in traditional plastic containers in their fabric pots.
Plastic containers get too hot for some crops such as potatoes. A study at the University of New Hampshire showed that on sunny, 80-degree days in New Hampshire, temperatures inside plastic containers can reach 125° F.
Potatoes and other vegetables don’t grow when container temperatures reach the cooking range. Since Smart Pots breathe, they release heat so your potatoes and vegetables continue growing all season long.
Smart Pots are available in sizes from 1 gallon all the way up to 400 gallons, so there’s a size to meet every need. We have four large Smart Pots in our front yard now, and they seem to hold up really good.
In addition to the original Smart Pots, they also offer:
- Smart Pots with handles
- Big Bag Bed
- Compost Sack
- Garlic and Onion Pot
- Flood Tray Liners
- Smart Wall Pouches
I’m excited to be receiving two of the Smart Wall Pouches (measuring 16” x 18”), which can be used to hang strawberries, flowers and other plants.
We plan to attach them to the fence as shown in the picture above, and the girls have asked if we can grow strawberries in them. I told them we could give it a shot! Hopefully if we hang them in the middle of the fence, the chipmunks won’t be able to get to them as easily.
If you’re planning to container garden this year, I recommend checking out Smart Pots as an alternative to plastic containers.
One reader will win two Smart Wall Pouches ($59.90 value) during the Honor the Earth Giveaway Hop! To enter, please complete the Rafflecopter form below. Good luck!
