When I was younger, I lit candles all the time. I have memories of black smoke emanating from them as they burned down. Little did I know at the time that I was actually inhaling toxic fumes from those candles.
As I have become more health conscious and eco-aware, I have started looking at alternatives to the toxic candles that I burned as a teen and in my early 20s. Most often, I’m sadly disappointed. Either the candle uses a toxic wax like paraffin (petroleum derived), or it uses synthetic fragrance oils, which are not good to breathe either.
What I have discovered is that the cleanest burning waxes are beeswax, non-GMO soy wax (no GMOs allowed in my house) and palm wax. There is a lot of controversy surrounding palm wax (which will be addressed in a guest post very soon), so you do have to be careful where your palm wax comes from. Be sure to look for the Green Palm Sustainability logo:
At Expo West, I was introduced to a candle company that uses sustainable palm wax to create safe, non-toxic candles – GoodLight Natural Candles.
They offer a variety of candles sizes, all made with unscented, sustainable palm wax. I got to try out several of their natural candles.
I lit one of the tealights to see how it would burn. I was surprised that I didn’t notice any smoke coming from the candle at all. It felt good to know that the candle wasn’t polluting the air in my home.
The palm wax candle also burned very smoothly and evenly. I burned a tealight for over 2 hours, and there was no hint that it would be burning out anytime soon, so we blew it out for the night. I think these would be great to have in our family’s emergency preparedness kit since they seem to burn for a long time in addition to burning cleanly.
I was very pleased with the quality of the candles. For times when you don’t want to burn a scented candle, I recommend trying GoodLight Natural Candles. You can also connect with GoodLight Natural Candles on Facebook or Twitter.
