Spring has arrived once again, and I'm loving every single minute of it. The sun is shining and there is a renewed sense of life all around us. Has the Spring Cleaning bug hit you yet?
This time of year, I always feel the need to clean and purge. I devoured The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. It made me remember how much I love living a simple, clutter free life. While it will take me a bit to get our clutter down, I'm focusing on spring cleaning in the meantime.
Since we live in the mountains on a tiny dirt road, our house becomes pretty dirty and cluttered over the winter. The house is definitely in need of a re-fresh! We'll start by packing up all of the winter coats and snowboarding gear – that alone will make a huge dent in the clutter.
After that, we'll pick a day where we open up all of the windows and get to work. Room by room, we'll go through and pick up everything then give it a deep clean. Of course, we'll be using natural cleaners – many of them DIY cleaners – for our Spring Cleaning project.
Here are some of my favorite DIY cleaning recipes:
- All purpose cleaner
- Homemade soft scrub
- Shower, tub and tile cleaner
- Wood polish
- Window cleaner
- Upholstery cleaner
- Toilet bombs
After whipping up a batch of all of the cleaners we need, we'll get to work. I like to turn on uplifting music when we're cleaning. That way we can dance while we clean. It's a lot easier to get the girls excited about cleaning with us if we can be silly and dance at the same time.
Pandora is awesome for getting the vibe your family wants when you're cleaning. If you haven't used it before you can create playlists based on your favorite artists or genres. We have a Smart TV, so we have the Pandora app on our TV – it makes spring cleaning much more festive!
What to Do After You Do the Basics
It's super easy to do the things you always do around the house – pick up the clutter, clean the bathrooms, mop the floors, vacuum the carpet, etc. But what about the stuff that you don't do routinely? You know, the stuff you ignore all year until you spring clean and you have to finally break down and do it?
For me, there are a few things I only do once or twice a year. One of those things is getting down on my hands and knees and washing every inch of the floors with my hands. I do mop regularly, but there are just crevices and cracks that never get reached by the mop. I usually grab my microfiber and some all purpose cleaner and go to work.
One other biggie that doesn't get done all the time is cleaning the carpets. Since we live in a national forest, pollen is abundant this time of year. We also live on a dirt road, so lots of dirt gets tracked into the house on top of the pollen.
Since Zoë has seasonal allergies, we like to clean the carpet at least once a year to minimize how much of the outdoors stays indoors. Instead of paying someone this year, we were excited to have the chance to give a Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet carpet cleaner a try.
We figured that if it was strong enough to work with pet issues, it would meet our needs! If you want to be able to clean your own carpet too, the new BISSELL ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet can help you tackle even the toughest stains (without bringing in a professional). It has two cleaning settings. The deep clean mode is for tougher stains. The express clean mode will leave your carpets clean and dry in just one hour. I love that I can do a quick clean on the carpet while the kids are out and they'll be dry before they get home.
I also like that the BISSELL ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet is lightweight so it's easier to maneuver. Did you see that it's about the same size as a vacuum? I was pretty stoked by that.
You can use the BISSELL ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet with a couple different cleaning formulas featuring Scotchgard™ to help keep your carpets looking newer for longer periods by cleaning, restoring and protecting carpet. It works by placing a barrier on the surface of carpet fibers to protect against future stains.
My kiddos spill – a lot – so I appreciate this extra protection for our carpet. I like that I don't have to do anything special with these formulas. Just open them up, put them in the machine and clean. Simple and easy is what I need! If you need more help with odors than stains, there's a formula for that too!
In the process of our spring cleaning, we're also decluttering – something we don't do as often as we should. We're sorting everything into keep, donate and trash piles. After we do this initial decluttering, I really do want the find time to follow the KonMari method to pare back our belongings even further!
