Are you trying to teach your kids they have an impact on Mother Earth? Check out our list of 6 ways kids can save the planet without leaving their bedroom.
Helping kids become planet crusaders can start right in their very own bedrooms. There are all sorts of ways for kids to start being more resourceful and aware of their carbon footprint without even leaving the comfort of their space.
If you have children at home and want them to be more resourceful and vigilant about the Earth around them, look below at 6 ways kids can save the planet without leaving their bedroom.
These 6 ideas are simple enough for any child to implement and each one is sure to make a difference!
1. Unplug appliances when not in use.
Get children into the habit of turning off appliances when not in use. With most children having computers in their rooms, this is one of the main items children should shut down when not in use.
Children should also unplug phone and tablet chargers if they aren’t being used, and turn off televisions if they aren’t being watched.
2. Use energy saving light bulbs.
Replace the light bulbs in children’s rooms with low wattage LED bulbs. You might also find that they don’t need numerous lights or lamps and that fewer will do.
Make these lighting changes and see how they can make a difference to your electricity usage. And to your kids' awareness of how they use energy!
3. Add clothing layers instead of running a space heater.
Kids tend to be the ones complaining they are cold, so encourage them to wear layers before cranking up the heat or a space heater, which isn’t just pricey to use, but can also cause a fire hazard.
Make sure they have plenty of sweaters and other layers on hand they can use to solve the problem of a drafty room. Extra blankets work great too!
4. Practice the care of houseplants to help clean the air.
Teaching kids how to care for plants is such an important life skill. Allow children to keep houseplants in their room so they can learn more about plant care, but also so they can see how plants keep the air around us clean.
5. Use a mini recycling bin for discarded items.
While your child might have a trash can in his or her room, make sure they have a small recycling bin too. As they craft, do homework, enjoy a snack or work on projects, paper items will build up.
Keeping a designated bin in their room will encourage them to recycle instead of throwing those items in the trash. And they can take pride in making good decisions for the Earth. Trust me, kids really get this stuff!
6. Turn off items when not in use.
Don’t let kids get into the habit of keeping a television on they aren’t watching or keeping music on they aren’t listening to. Don’t let them leave their room without turning their lights and all appliances off.
This is an excellent habit to get into, and one that can follow them into adulthood. Place reminders on light switches if you need to in order to jog their memory as they leave the room.
Is your child ready to be more active in the preservation and care of this planet? Of course they are! Then consider these 6 ways kids can save the planet without leaving their bedroom. They are sure to make a difference in the way your child sees the world!
