If you’re here, you’re probably thinking about making the transition to a natural deodorant. You may have switched out all of your other personal care products, but have been intimated to switch to a natural deodorant.
I have been there. Deodorant was the very last natural swap I made. I have very sensitive skin in that region of my body and I get a rash from nearly every conventional deodorant. Over the years, I had found one that worked and I was very hesitant to give it up – even for a natural deodorant.
When I finally took the leap, it was a transition. Your body goes through an adjustment period when you switch to a natural deodorant – almost like a cleanse. Some people find they smell or sweat more during this transition period, but once the adjustment is over, their body likes the natural deodorant.
Many people find that doing an armpit cleanse during this transition period actually makes the process easier. Here’s how you would do it.
- Just before making the switch to a natural deodorant, remove toxins and dead skin from your armpits using a loofah.
- While your armpits are still wet, apply either baking soda or arrowroot power (many people are sensitive to baking soda and will prefer the arrowroot powder). Next, apply an aluminum-free deodorant like Tom’s of Maine.
- When your armpits start to smell (they will during this transition), just go ahead and wash them again and repeat the process in step 2.
- You’ll probably need to follow this routine for about two weeks (some people only need a few days). At this point you should be able to go for 6-8 hours with your natural deodorant working for you.
Please note that natural deodorants are not antiperspirants. You will still sweat, but after your body is done cleansing itself of the toxins, you should sweat less and less over time depending upon your activities.
Choosing a Natural Deodorant

Tom’s of Maine natural Long Lasting Natural Deodorant is the best-selling natural deodorant and has been for decades because it’s so accessible.
