Now that Zoë is out of school for the summer, I’m already hearing, “I’m bored” more than I’d like and we’re barely a week in. We sat down last week and started making a list of activities we wanted to do together this summer. I figured this would be a good way to get the girls involved in making a plan, and something fun for us to do as a family.
The girls love anything crafty and hands on, so a lot of those types of activities are making it onto our list. I have made non-toxic play dough in the past, but now that the girls are past the putting-stuff-in-their-mouth-constantly phase, I can be a little more flexible about the ingredients we use in homemade play dough.
We came across a tutorial on how to make silky smooth play dough with only 2 simple ingredients that are commonly found in most households, so we decided it was something worth trying.
The girls had fun mixing it up and playing with it. It kept them busy for a couple hours between making it and playing with it, so I’d say it was well worth the fun. This particular recipe doesn’t have a long shelf life though, so don’t make more than you think your kiddos will play with in a few days.
2 Ingredient Silky Smooth Homemade Play Dough Recipe
- 1 cup hair conditioner
- 2-3 cups corn starch
- Put the conditioner in a bowl with 2 cups of cornstarch, and mix until well combined.
- If it’s still sticky, add a little more cornstarch at a time until you get the play dough to a consistency you like.
- You can add food coloring to the dough for more variety. We used some natural food coloring, so our dough had very pastel shades.
- Store in an airtight container or ziploc bag. Keep out of reach of small children as this dough is inedible.
