As we've traveled along on our natural living journey, one area we have not really even looked at addressing is toilet paper usage. I've written about family cloth before, but using reusable toilet paper just isn't for us. Finding another eco-friendly toilet paper option hasn't been easy though.
I was reading how much toilet paper is used in the US each year and was startled to discover that more than seven billion rolls of toilet paper are sold yearly in the U.S. alone! That's a lot of toilet paper!
What's sad is that global toilet paper production consumes 27,000 trees daily. So, how can we cut back on that usage? Because that's a lot of trees being cut down each year just for toilet paper.
One of my big concerns about using recycled paper products, especially ones that come in such close contact with my body, is BPA and BPS. Studies have found a high concentration of BPA and/or BPS in recycled paper, so we now avoid it.
I recently learned that Scott has come out with an eco-friendly toilet paper option that can calm your worry about BPA and BPS exposure. Scott Tube-Free toilet paper comes in a roll just like you're used to seeing, but without the inner cardboard core.
It may not seem like much to just remove the tube, but consider that there are 17 billion cardboard tubes used each year between toilet paper, paper towels, etc. An average of 150 tubes are used in each home, every year, in the US. By reducing that number, we can definitely reduce the number of trees that are being used in toilet paper production.
If you think about it, the tube really isn't necessary, so it's an easy way to make a small change that can have a big impact. That's what I love about this journey. We can keep making small changes that add up to something big in the end. And, with this change, you don't have to dramatically change your lifestyle – win-win.
If you like the idea of making this small change, check out this great video. Scott Tube-Free teamed up with a YouTube prankster, to demonstrate how the toilet paper tubes we use have a big impact on our world. The prank uses 66,000 tubes – can you believe we go through that many every 2 minutes in the US?
