I think my kids have the longest summer ever. They are already out for summer break and don’t return to school until after Labor Day. That’s 4 months. Not that I’m complaining – at all – I adore my girls and love having them home. Having that big of a break from school, though, can really lead to summer slide or learning loss.
Studies show that if you spend 2-3 hours a week on educational activities during the summer months, children will retain essential skills and be ready for the upcoming school year! That’s why we still do educational activities with our girls through the summer.
Both of them miss school when it’s not in session, so we try to make summer learning fun and productive for them. We integrate a lot of learning into our everyday life, but it’s nice to have structured activities as well – especially on busy work days.
While I’m as much of a Pinterest junkie as you can imagine, sometimes I like to have something I can just grab for the girls to do rather than getting online and finding the perfect activity. I love being super mom, but I can’t do it every day 🙂
That’s why I’m excited that we’ll be using the Carson-Dellosa Summer Bridge Activities workbook with the girls this year to prevent summer slide.
Next year, Kaylee will be entering 1st grade and Zoë will be entering 3rd grade. I can hardly believe that they’re getting so big! I love that Carson-Dellosa has workbooks for in between each grade level. That way, if the format works well for your child, you can use it each summer.
If you haven’t heard of Carson-Dellosa Summer Bridge Activities workbooks before, I recommend you check them out before summertime hits your house. They are teacher recommended and award-winning workbooks that were specifically created to help prevent summer slide (aka learning loss) and prepare your child for the next school year. All it takes is spending 15 minutes a day with the workbook and you can help prevent summer slide.
As soon as this book arrived at our post office, Kaylee was jumping up and down wanting to do some activities. She has really been missing school, so having this book in her sweet little hands is music to my ears. She dove right in and got to work even though she got it just before dinner time!
Each 160-page workbook includes:
- 12 weeks worth of activities based on current state standards
- Essential skill review and next-grade preparation
- Outdoor and fitness activities
- Science experiments (excellent indoor activities for those rainy days)
- Social studies exercises
- Flash cards
- Reward stickers
- Summer reading lists
- Completion certificate
In addition, activities such as goal setting, character development exercises and fitness challenges help get kids moving and thinking so that they can stay active and healthy.
I love the variety of exercises provided in the book. It gives a good solid baseline for important educational areas that we can supplement with our own activities. And Kaylee seems to think it’s pretty fun too – that’s important!
