School is out! That means the kids get a nice break from school and I get to spend more time with them. While I definitely want the kids to be able to enjoy their summer, I don't want reading levels to backslide over the break.
Zoë and I agreed that she would read every day this summer so that she can work on improving her reading skills. She made so much amazing progress over the last year and I don't want her reading skills to get rusty. Fortunately she is finally to the point where she's really starting to love the fact that she can read pretty well now. She tries to read everything she sees – I'm so proud of her!
I have been exploring different ways that she can practice her reading skills over the summer. The girls have a great selection of books to choose from, but we also like to use interactive learning tools. When we heard about Disney Story Central, I thought that could be a pretty fun way for her to practice reading. And the bonus is that Kaylee gets to participate too.
If you haven't heard of Disney Story Central yet, it offers the largest collection of Disney digital stories, including a good variety of Disney stories and characters so there's something for everyone to love. The app is available for iPhone and iPad app, tablet-optimized website and Video on Demand (AT&T U-Verse). You can get it in the iTunes Store.
The girls had such a fun time picking out new books in Disney Story Central! I never realized how curious my girls were about weddings until we were looking at books on Disney Story Central. They picked out 4 wedding-themed books. You can pick out books a-la-carte using Disney Book Tokens like we did. Or you can sign up for a subscription package and gain access to Disney Story Central’s expansive library of books for $7.99 a month.
Since Zoë is becoming a pretty independent reader and Kaylee is just learning her letter sounds, I like the option for them each to have their own “bookshelf.” They can each store the books they want in Disney Story Central and get reading recommendations based upon their interests. The girls also liked being able to browse books based upon characters since they each have their favorites.
The one character set they agree upon is Elsa and Anna from Frozen!
I really loved that you could choose how the book flows in Disney Story Central. Option 1 is for it to be completely automated. The story is read and the paged are turned with no interaction for your child (great for the little ones). Option 2 is for the story to be read by the app, but the child initiates the turning of pages. Option 3 is for the child to read the story themselves and to also turn the pages. The different options make the app work for kids of multiple ages.
And I love how each word turns red as it's read by the app. This will help encourage kids to learn new words.
As the girls were reading through all of the books on Disney Story Central, they also got pretty excited that they were earning Stars, Ranks, and Trophies. These rewards help encourage kids to keep reading because they want to keep winning awards.
If you're looking for new ways to inspire your kids to read more this summer, be sure to check out Disney Story Central. It's so important for us to encourage our kids to develop a lifetime love of reading!
