I can’t believe it – Happy Mothering turned 3 yesterday! I can’t believe that I have made it 3 years writing here!
I know I have a lot of new readers, and I have been getting asked a lot lately about how I got started, so I thought I’d celebrate the occasion by sharing that story.
It was March 2009. We were getting ready for our year-long trip to South America in May 2009, and I was sitting in an airport waiting to board a plane for my first weekend away from Zoë to visit one of my college roommates and see her baby before we left.
I had been thinking about starting a website dedicated to natural baby products for a while, but started toying with the idea of blogging about it instead. I felt inspired to write. So I did. I wrote the first few articles you’ll find in the Happy Mothering archives that day. That weekend I also bought my domain name.
Nothing got published then, but I kept the articles saved for the right time. We arrived in Uruguay on May 12, 2009 and started our blog about our journey of living there. But Happy Mothering was always in the back of my mind. So I started it in secret. I didn’t tell anyone, not even Brian.
I remember the day he discovered Happy Mothering. I was sitting in our tiny bedroom in our Uruguay apartment and he came in and told me he’d found the blog, and that he was impressed with the content, but didn’t like the design (we were on TypePad at the time). I think that was around November, because I started to get more serious about blogging in December when Brian helped me get my social media channels set up. I also worked on the theme to make it look better.
Honestly, I never knew where blogging would take me. When Zoë was a baby, I struggled to find information on natural products, so I wanted to be a resource for other moms since I tend to research things to death once I get interested in something. I had no clue there was even a huge mommy blogging community out there – I’m still just getting my feet wet there!
Today, this blog is an outlet for me to share not only the wonderful natural products that make my life as a mom easier, but it’s a way for me to connect with other moms as well. Being a work at home or stay at home mom can be a lonely gig, and it’s nice to have somewhere you can turn to connect with women who are in a similar place as you are.
So, whether you’re a long-time reader or you’re just stumbling upon Happy Mothering for the first time, welcome – I’m happy to have you here. I hope we can connect and share in this journey of motherhood.
