Looking for some great theme park games and ides for passing the time in line? Then you’ve come to the right place!
We went to Disneyland in May for Zoë’s birthday and it was quite an eye opener for the kids (and my husband) about how much time you spend standing in line at amusement parks. We got right on some rides but had to wait for around 2 hours to get on Hyper Space Mountain. It was my favorite ride as a kid, so I really wanted to go on it 🙂
Theme parks are crazy fun and make for wonderful family memories, but waiting in lines….not so much. It felt like the longest 2 hours of my life waiting our turn to ride Hyper Space Mountain, and I could see the people around us getting pretty stir crazy too.
There are some things you can do to help pass the time when you’re standing in line at amusement parks like Disneyland. If you get creative, you can keep everyone entertained and keep the whining to a minimum.
Here’s a list of 7 theme park games to help your family pass the time in line.
Play I Spy
Play a good old fashioned game of I Spy to pass the time quickly. Change it up and make it things like “ I spy a cartoon character,” “I Spy someone with an ice cream cone” or “ I spy the number 3.”
Have a Snack
Grab something that is not too messy (an ice cream cone is probably not the best idea at this time) and have a snack. Waiting in line is the perfect time to enjoy a light snack like fruit, popcorn, a pretzel, etc… Food always keeps the kiddos quiet! Grab some napkins and a drink too. Even if you are still snacking when it’s your turn there is usually a trashcan to toss it into.
Plan the Rest of Your Day
Spend some time talking about what you would like to do next. Ask everyone what are their top 5 must see attractions or characters to visit. Get out the map and plot out where you will have lunch or your next snack. Conversation is a great way to pass the time.
People watching is fun everywhere you go, and theme parks are no different. Watch people pass by and make up stories about where they are from – Europe? Who are they there with? How old? How many turkey legs have they had today? Just make sure you’re talking about people that are passing by, not those in line next to you 😉
Name that Tune
Hum a few lines from your favorite song from a cartoon, TV show or movie or even your favorite top hit. Take turns guessing what one another is humming and you will be on the ride before you even know it.
Talk to Strangers
Normally you would tell your children NOT to talk to strangers, but since they are with you it is pretty safe. Introduce yourself to the people in front and back of you, share where you are from and the ages of the kids. Ask questions like, “Is this your first time here?” or “What was the most fun thing you’ve done today?” Get the kids talking and involved in socializing to pass the time too.
If all of the above ideas fail, you can always turn to the phones for some theme park games. Fun apps will keep them busy while you are waiting for the line to move without much fuss. Grab some apps that fit with the theme of wherever you are. When we were at Disneyland, everyone was playing Charades on their phones and having a blast! It must have been the latest thing. I will definitely make sure we have that one downloaded before our next trip to Disneyland.
