I have always wanted to live a life full of adventure. Dreams of traveling and seeing the world have been with me for as long as I can remember. Even as I teenager, I preferred to spend my limited money on experiences rather than things.
Fortunately, I married a man who also has an adventurous spirit. We have had many wonderful experiences in our lives, but our most adventurous would have to be the year we spent in Uruguay.
When Zoë was 6 months old, we decided that we wanted to travel as a family. So we sold all of our possessions, down to what would fit in 13 suitcases, and hopped on a plane to Uruguay – a country we'd never been to before – the day after Zoë turned 1.
Some people called us crazy. Others said they wished they could do what we were doing. All we knew is that it was the right decision for us. It was a big decision, a scary one, but awesome and exciting all at the same time.
Our first week in Uruguay I got pregnant with Kaylee, so instead of traveling around South America like we planned, our feet were planted in Montevideo. Of course we traveled around Uruguay by car and bus, and we even took a couple trips to Buenos Aires, but most of our time was spent in Montevideo.
This was the view from our balcony. I do often miss that small market across the street – it was so convenient!
One of my favorite excursions was when we went to Punta Del Diablo. It was so relaxing and peaceful to be outside of the city for a few days. The views weren't bad either.
Living in a bustling city where I was just learning the language was an amazing, life changing experience. There is really so much we learned about ourselves in our time there that I can't squeeze into one post. You can visit our Uruguay blog to read about our experiences if you're curious.
Someday when the girls are just a bit older, I'd love to go overseas for another year. It's an awesome experience I recommend everyone do sometime.
When planning for an experience like ours, it's very important to plan out what you're going to bring with you. We spent a lot of time researching what we'd bring, and it really paid off for us.
If we were to go overseas again, we'd definitely put some research into the items that we'd need for that stage of our lives. I know our packing list would look much different today than it did 5 years ago (for example, we wouldn't need to pack an entire suitcase of diapers this time).
Target has some great products that would make your adventure even better. You could even make a registry at Target so friends and family could contribute to your adventures. Here are a few items you may want to consider adding:
- SwissGear City Pack (gotta have a good backpack for exploring town)
- Canon EOS Rebel T5I (a good camera is a must for documenting your experience)
- Rosetta Stone Spanish V4 Totale (or the language for the country you'll be visiting)
- U.S. Traveler or Traveler's Choice Luggage Set
- Lewis and Clark Neck Pillow (you will want to sleep on an international flight)
- Travel Smart Converter Adapter Set (don't forget to check the power supply in the country you're visiting)
- Belle Hop Lightweight Travel Blanket (planes can get cold and many airlines don't provide blankets)
- Travel Smart Compact Luggage Scale (these things are super handy so you can optimize your packing)
If you have kids, you will also want to make sure you have a few new toys for the plane ride as well as coloring books and other activities to keep them busy.
What's the most adventurous trip you've been on?
