Unlike most people, I typically don’t mind going to the dentist. I’ve only ever had one cavity way back in second grade, and it was the size of a pinhead so it was easy to fix.
Other than that, I’ve had a pretty easygoing experience with dentist visits. I do have one wisdom tooth, however, that needs to be pulled.
I was only born with 3 wisdom teeth, so this guy is a loner. He floats around, causes me pain and breaks one of my molars repeatedly.
I’ve put off having it removed because I’m not a big fan of medical procedures in general. However, I’m tired of the pain coming and going – it’s time to take care of the problem rather than let it fester.
So I called up the local dentist that I normally go see and they didn’t have an opening for a wisdom tooth extraction for four months. Seriously, four months.
Who wants to be in pain for four months? Since we live up in the mountains, our healthcare options are very limited.
If we want any sort of specialized service, we have to drive down the mountain to one of the larger healthcare systems. We take our daughters to a pediatric dentist off the mountain, and I decided it was about time to find a dentist we like off the mountain too – because this situation of not being able to get an appointment is out of control.
How do you go about finding a new dentist though? You can ask for referrals from friends, of course, but everyone has a different opinion and experience. And then you have to factor in the differences between insurance providers. It can get really messy, right?
While I had all of this going on in my head, I discovered, The Smile Generation. It’s a convenient service that helps you find a dentist in your area – or wherever you are since they currently have 650 locations across the country (and more are being added regularly).
I think it’s great they have pediatric dentists listed in many areas as well as orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, oral surgery, teeth whitening and more. In addition, they have offices that have staff trained to treat patients with special needs.
The website is really straightforward and easy to use. You simply enter your location on The Smile Generation homepage.
Then you get a list of dentist offices that meet your criteria.
Then you can actually go in and check out the dental offices. There are pictures and bios and links to the dentist's websites. It's very easy to use.
You can also read reviews from other patients of that dentist's office. I find that to be extremely helpful!
If you find yourself without dental insurance, they offer two financial options that can be used whether you have insurance or not. For example, the My Smile Dental Plan gives its members discounted fees on certain services and Smile Generation Financial offers affordable financing options.
If you find yourself in need of a new dentist in a pinch, check out The Smile Generation.
