As many teens do, I got braces when I was 13. I was fortunate to only wear them for 1 1/2 years, and after I got them off I wore retainers to keep my teeth straight.
Even 20 years later, I still wear my retainers at night. Partially to keep my teeth in place, but mainly because I grind my teeth in my sleep – enough to where I have worn the enamel off my teeth near my gum line. After repairing the damage, my dentist made retainers that included a bite plate so that I can’t grind my teeth.
Like most moms, I rush through my day trying to get everything done, but never having time to do everything that needs to be done. One task that has been ignored for years – yes years – is properly cleaning my retainers. I usually just rinse them off with water in the morning and go about my day (I scrub them with toothpaste on a rare occasion).
This neglect has led to a lot of buildup on them, especially my lower retainer which doesn’t fit as tightly. They were really starting to get to the point where I knew I needed to do something about it when I was introduced to Fresh Guard™, the only cleaning product designed specifically for retainers, mouthguards and removable braces.
Unlike other products people use to clean their retainers like & toothpaste, mouthwash, denture cleaners, vinegar, etc., Fresh Guard™ will not damage the product, cause discoloration, corrode metal or damage other materials. It will also kill bacteria and prevent the build-up of mouth film.

I decided to give the soak a try, even though I wasn’t confident it would be able to cut through the residue on my lower retainer. All you have to do is submerge your retainers in warm water, then pour a packet of Fresh Guard™ in with it and let it sit for 5 minutes (a maximum of 10 minutes).
When Fresh Guard™ is done working, it will turn from blue to clear.
The package explained that it would take multiple soaks for heavy stains or residue. It took 2 soaks to get my top retainer clean and 5 soaks plus some elbow grease to get my bottom retainer clean.
I was really impressed that it actually worked to get my bottom retainer clean. I plan to use Fresh Guard™ regularly to keep my retainers clean from now on.
For on the go, Fresh Guard™ also comes in an effervescent wipe form so you can keep your retainers clean on the go. It would have been great to have these in High School when I wore my retainers around the clock.
