For any family seeking a winter getaway, Spain contains all the key components: warm weather, great food, friendly people, wonderful cultural attractions and numerous learning opportunities. If you’re after a revitalizing and enchanting vacation, Spain should be placed at (or very near) the top of any prospective list of destinations.
Top Island Destinations
While educational experiences are highly recommended, there is one important thing that needs to be included on an itinerary: fun! A great way of having fun in Spain at all times of the year (and especially during winter, due to the higher temperatures) is to head to one of its many beautiful islands.
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and luckily, finding a cheap flight to Tenerife is easy, with many low-cost airlines flying there direct. There are some amazing experiences to offer kids of all ages including the much-loved Slam Park water park and Artlandya Puppen Museum for children.
Alternatively, try Lanzarote for arguably the best family resort in the island group at Playa Blanca. Being a compact size, hiring a car and exploring the unreal volcanic landscape of Lanzarote is also fantastic – and affordable – holiday activity.
Learn the Fun Way
Naturally, the top priority for any parent on vacation is that their kids should be happy and enjoy themselves; however, next on the list should undoubtedly be finding ways for the kids to grow their knowledge and understanding of the world through unique and interesting experiences.
In this regard Spain offers an incredible opportunity with its amazing array of rich cultural and historical attractions which can be visited over the course of the vacation. A prime example of this is the awe-inspiring Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao which has one of the most incredible designs of any building anywhere in the world; inside it perhaps even surpasses its exterior with incredible art collections from some of the greatest artists of all-time.
Another prime educational event for the kids to visit and learn from is the 3 hour walk/tour that takes place in Madrid called ‘The Civil War and Madrid under Franco' which outlines the key parts of the city that relate to this tumultuous time in Spain's history. American kids should be able to relate to this well after learning about the American Civil War at school.
All in all, Spain offers a great deal for a winter vacation with the kids. Due to the current economic woes, low-price vacations are always on offer and Spain is actively encouraging the tourist trade, making the country an even more attractive proposition.
