I love listening to pop music with my daughters. It started on the many blogging roadtrips we’ve taken together over the years and it will probably continue forever.
The smiles they get on their faces when they listen to music they enjoy makes my heart happy. When they were little, I didn’t worry to much about lyrics, but now that they’re getting older, I’m really thinking twice about some of the pop music we find ourselves listening too.
It’s really sad and scary if you listen to some of the messages in pop songs. I really don’t want who they are to be shaped by some of those messages.
So I’ve been listening more closely to what they listen to and trying to steer them away from the worst offenders. My 8-year old actually just asked for one of her favorite Pandora stations to be removed because we all agreed that singer was not a good example.
So when we sat down to listen to Francesca Battistelli‘s new album Own It (which was released today!), I was thrilled to find a familiar sound to many of the songs, but with clean lyrics. It’s a follow-up album to her 2014 GRAMMY®-nominated album If We’re Honest.
I think it’s great that she co-wrote nine of the ten songs found on Own It. I feel like so many music artists today don’t write their own music anymore so I love that.
Her inspiration for the album really spoke to me as well. I think so many women, me included, don’t always fully own who we are. It’s time we did!
“I thought I had a handle on what this album was going to be, but my husband and I prayed before every songwriting session, and God gave me a completely different set of songs than I was expecting,” Battistelli exclaims. “These songs are so empowering. What they represent to me is my desire to own my identity in Christ, to kick fear out of my life, to own the present moment and not live in the past or even the future. I don’t want to walk in half of what God has for me. I want to walk in all of it. I want to own it! And I want that for everyone who listens too.”
After listening to the album a couple of times, we decided on our favorite songs. The tracks in bold were our favorites:
- The Breakup Song
- The Very Best
- Love Somebody
- Royalty (video)
- This Could Change Everything (video)
- As Good As It Gets
- You Belong
- Let The Light In
- Defender (feat. Steffany Gretzinger)
If you like current pop music, you’ll love The Breakup Song (my girls loved it!). Here’s the video!
I really related to Let the Light In with what I’m going through with my health right now. I’m trying to really relax, not stress so much and focus on letting the light in. I have a feeling I’ll find myself listening to this song regularly.
