Now, I’m not one to watch Martha Stewart. Don’t get me wrong, I love cooking and being domestic and all that, but I’m just not particularly fond of the woman. I never have been.
So one day I was flipping through the channels and stopped on her show. Really for no apparent reason. Just fate I guess.
There was a doctor on her show talking about healing your mind by healing your body. Made sense to me. So I stopped to watch the interview.
The doctor she was interviewing was Mark Hyman, MD. He had recently published the book, The UltraMind Solution: Fix Your Broken Brain by Healing Your Body First.
Normally this might not have interested me so much, but I was dealing with a mild case of post-partum depression after having my daughter. I try to avoid taking medication when possible, and focus on natural methods of healing, so this interview really struck a chord with me.
I ordered the book from Amazon.com (love, love, love Amazon). As soon as I got the book I read the entire thing and just couldn’t believe how much sense it made to me, and why this concept had never occurred to me.
Of course what we put into our bodies affects how our minds work! We’re so brainwashed today to separate the “food” we eat from nature’s purpose that I’m sure most people wouldn’t really consider this until it’s presented to them in a manner like this.
The plan Dr. Mark Hyman lays out in The UltraMind Solution is very easy to follow. He gives you step by step instructions for each day and it’s very easy to plan your week out. He even offers a companion guide on his website (you’ll need the book in order for the companion guide to make sense).
So, I followed The UltraMind Solution diet to the tee for 6 weeks and I had noticeably more energy and just felt better in general. I was on a very low dose anti-depressant and I was able to stop taking it (please don’t stop taking any medication without talking to your doctor first). That was a huge relief because it was such a big and painful decision for me to even go on it in the first place.
I highly recommend The UltraMind Solution to every mom out there. We all have a lot on our plates and can forget to take care of ourselves sometimes. Let’s face it. Having a happy mommy makes everyone in the house happier.
As soon as this baby is born in February, I’m going to start adhering to the principles in The UltraMind Solution much more closely again (confession: it’s just been too hard for me to stick to the regimen with these food cravings!) so I can pro-actively avoid dealing with post partum depression this time around.
