My friend Danny Ladwa is a Professional Beatboxer and owner of School of Beatbox… doing it internationally for 25+ years… arguably one of the best beatboxers in the world!!!
I Love Beatboxing
For those of you who are wondering what beatboxing is… simply put, beatboxing is making sounds and beats with your mouth that is pleasurable to other people’s ears and they desire to hear more.
The 1st time I heard beatboxing was back in 1987, I was 9 almost 10 years old and one of my friends had a brand new cassette tape he couldn’t wait to have me listen to. We swapped tapes from our Walkmans (back in the day if you wanted to listen to new or different music, you’d swap tapes with your friends). What cassette did I listen to? The soundtrack for the movie “Disorderlies” featuring The Fat Boys.
So, I tried to beatbox and tried over and over again until my lips were numb… and let me tell you… I sucked horribly bad… fingernails on a chalkboard bad. I’ve always thought it was so amazingly cool when someone could beatbox and do it proper.
Danny Ladwa and Music
Danny, like me, grew up loving music… everything about it. When Danny was 11 years old, he started writing soundtracks in his head. Danny started expressing his compositions through singing and beatboxing. Like Michael Winslow (Police Academy), Danny soon realized he could make more sounds than he thought. And they sounded the exact opposite of what I was doing at that age, he was on fire.
Danny put his head down and worked at learning beatboxing and how to write music, it is his passion. Danny dove into music, exploring music from all over the world. He would incorporate different beats, sounds, and tones into his beatboxing. He would study how his vocal cords would vibrate or how the sounds would change as he changed the position of his tongue.
Danny got better and better at beatboxing and soon gained the nickname “Lyrikool Lipz” because of how amazing he is, he sings and beatboxes at the same time. Everyone everywhere Danny would go was always asking him to beatbox and to perform and Danny loved every moment.
By 2002, Danny gained the attention of everyone who heard him. He was getting invited to sit in with musicians and then asked to come into the studio. He was working alongside some heavy hitters in the Hip-Hop and Drum & Bass music scene and he found himself starting on his 1st international tour in Brazil.
After Brazil, Danny’s beatboxing career took off. He was courted by and joined a band who was signed under the same label as Bjork and was touring Europe having the time of his life.
By 2005 Danny caught the attention of Gaudi (world famous producer/ musician/ X-Factor Italia Coach) and the Live Dub Laboratory at the Glade Festival in the UK .
For the next several years Danny kept on performing improving his skills and stage presence. He was touring and performing across Europe and for short runs to other countries having the time of his life.
Gaudi stayed in contact with Danny and had Danny come into the studio so he could be featured on one of Gaudi’s tracks on Gaudi’s 2010 album then starting in 2011, Gaudi took Danny on a Worldwide Tour. Though Danny had been to many different countries to perform, he’d never been on an actual around the world tour going to new countries back to back to back. He was beyond stoked and absolutely crushed every show.
Danny worked closely with Gaudi honing his skills and learning different ways of approaching music creation. It was a great time of learning and fun in Danny’s life.
Gaudi and Danny had so much fun on their 1st world tour… Gaudi invited Danny along for their 2nd world tour together. From 2011 to 2015 Danny and Gaudi toured the world. Danny was featured on several tracks on Gaudi’s subsequent albums. This is the timeframe when I met Danny and Gaudi. 2 of the most fun and funniest guys I know. We’ve had tons of fun together and we’ve been friends since.
Danny launched his first album “Unfolding” back in 2015 and has since set out on multiple world tours while being featured on more albums and performing to thousands of people every night.
By 2016 one of Danny’s songs was selected to be aired on BBC prime time radio… and he started working with Mo Pleasure.
If you don’t know… Mo Pleasure is formerly the music director of Earth, Wind & Fire. He has worked with Michael Jackson, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Christina Aguilera, and so many more A-listers. Mo and Danny started on a music project together and Danny played non-stop in the UK and crushed the London scene.
In 2017 Danny linked up with Gaudi for a mega show in India… not like a few thousand people… but like more people than you could count. Reeling off the mega show Danny started teaching inspiring artists through a UK agency. Danny passionately loves teaching people.
Another Passion Develops
Danny has a huge heart. He has always truly enjoyed teaching people how to beatbox. It started with 1 friend… then the next and the next. Before he knew it Danny was being approached by random people who heard him and would ask how he beatboxed the way he did and to also help them beatbox too. Danny would always take the time to help people, giving them tips and advice. Danny has ultimately found true joy in helping people learn how to beatbox and sing.
Over the past year, Danny put his head down again and decided to create “School of Beatbox” To help people. To help people express their music, to help people express their souls, to help people discover themselves and to also help people who have speech impediments gain control of their mouths and vocal cords.
On Danny’s blog over at School of Beatbox, you can read why helping people with Speech Impediments is so important to him. Danny himself once had a tremendous stammer. Helping people overcome a stammer is life changing and Danny helps change peoples’ lives for the better. Danny is very actively involved with the British Stammering Association. Like I said earlier, “HUGE HEART.”
School of Beatbox was something Danny dreamed up a long time ago and it’s finally a reality. The Internet is truly amazing and what’s more is the ability to create a service you can do virtually… and that’s what Danny did.
Danny has put his heart and soul into creating the best course possible with School of Beatbox, it’s an amazing product. Here’s what Danny has to say about it!!!
