Are you looking for STEM gift ideas under $30? The My First Lab Duo Scope Starter Kit makes a wonderful gift because microscopes are fun and educational!
Thank you to My First Lab for providing the product mentioned in this post. All opinions are my own.
I really love encouraging our daughters to hone their skills in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). Since we homeschool, we’re fortunate to have a greater opportunity to influence their daily learning.
Both Zoë and Kaylee have been showing a huge interest in what things are made of lately, so we thought it would be fun to get them a microscope. We didn’t want something that was a big investment since they’re both still pretty young, so they got the Duo Scope Starter Kit from My First Lab to try out.
The Duo Scope Starter Kit is designed for kids ages 8 and up, and retails for $29.99. This powerful kit is based on the best-selling microscope, the Duo Scope, and is designed for elementary through middle school age students.
In 2015, the Duo Scope™ Starter Kit earned a 2015 Product of the Year Award from Creative Child magazine. As the name implies, it has a dual focus knob that allows a child’s eye to examine 10x the size of an object, up to 400x magnification power, as its top and bottom LED lights allow solid objects and slides to be examined.
It even comes with a 40-piece accessory kit including Brine Shrimp Eggs Specimen Vial, Hatchery, 3 Empty Specimen Vials, 1 Yeast Specimen Vial and many more. The girls are having a blast using it during science time in our homeschool.
I keep seeing them sneak views of items they find around the yard too. It’s fun and educational (and affordable too)!
If you want something with more features, then My First Lab has you covered too. My First Lab, a children’s educational product line of C&A Scientific, a lab product manufacturer and scientific supply company, has invested over 20 years of expertise to build a microscope that is inexpensive enough for a child, but possessing an image quality good enough for an adult.
The two other scopes you’ll want to look at if you want an upgrade are the Duo Scope and the WOW Scope. They’ve both earned Creative Product of the Year Awards, and make great gift ideas this year for kids ages 9 and up.
If you’re looking for a stocking stuffer, check out the Smartphone Inspector. It’s an adaptable add-on for any smartphone or tablet with a built-in camera. All you have to do is attach it to your phone and you have a compact, lightweight, high-resolution digital microscope for on-the go!
With this attachment, students can hover over anything that is in their path and view it clearly with up to 60X magnification. It comes fully assembled with the batteries already installed. All you have to do is clip it over the camera eye on your smart phone, turn on the camera app and you are ready to go!
The Smartphone Inspector makes a wonderful holiday gift for big kids (teens to Dads) too! It’s ideal for ages 12 and up, and retails for $12.99.
