Being a work at home mom for the last 4 years, I have really settled into that role. At first it was so odd to work in the same place I lived. Even still, I have trouble separating work time from home time – things get intertwined way to easily. There are definitely pros and cons to that, but I wouldn’t have life any other way.
Over the last few years, I have discovered a few things that make working at home easier – and more comfortable – for me. Here are 5 things I consider essential for working at home.
Schedule / To Do List
It’s very easy to get distracted by things that need to be done around the house (like washing those dirty dishes) when you work from home. I have found that making a to do list for each day helps to keep my on task. I’m still working on adhering to a schedule, but I rely upon my to do list.
A Comfortable Work Space
Your work space will depend upon what you do. I end up blogging from my living room couch most of the time. My essential oil business supplies are quickly sprawling throughout the living room. It’s time to reorganize for a more comfortable work space now that I have expanded what I do. Staying organized is so important.
Good Tea (or Coffee) Mugs
Now that cold weather has arrived, I nearly always have a cup of tea by my side. For some reason, I love tea mugs, so for me having one you love is essential for working from home.
Now that Kaylee is in pre-school a few days a week, the need for headphones has been reduced, but I still find them invaluable. It allows me to listen to presentations or training sessions uninterrupted without having to ask the kids to keep quiet.
Comfortable Yoga Pants
I have found that a lot of people recommend getting up, getting dressed, doing your hair and putting on your makeup each morning, even if you work from home. I, on the other hand, find the fact that I can work in yoga pants and not have to dress up every day to be a huge perk of working from home. I’m wearing comfy yoga pants as I type this! But do whatever makes you feel best. Now I just need to get the inspiration to actually start practicing yoga again. One step at a time, right? 🙂
