Who else hates finding rock hard brown sugar in the pantry? Check out my one simple hack to keep brown sugar soft all year long!
It’s fall and winter is on our heels. Families everywhere, mine included, are getting in the holiday spirit by baking up a storm. I have always loved baking cookies, and it’s so much more fun with my girls.
I think we’ll be baking these Gluten Free Gingersnaps soon. Oh and I love these Gluten Free Salted Caramel & Chocolate Shortbread Cookies too! And it’s not Girl Scout cookie season yet, but you can make your own Gluten Free Thin Mints if you’re craving them! I have lots of cookie recipes 🙂
Imagine this. You find the perfect recipe. You head to the pantry to grab the brown sugar. And you realize that brand new, unopened bag you bought last month is hard as a rock already.
Living in the mountains, we have very low humidity in the air. I can buy a bag of brown sugar and have it be a solid brick two weeks later without even opening it. It’s crazy!
I finally discovered one simple hack that keeps my brown sugar soft. And it can even revive rock hard brown sugar too! I’ve done it several times and it works every time.
The Brown Sugar Bear is a Lifesaver!
I had my doubts when I heard that putting a soaked terra cotta figurine in your brown sugar could keep it nice and soft. Then I tried it.
I was stunned by how well it works! I can go into my jar of brown sugar a month after putting a freshly soaked brown sugar bear in it and it’s as fresh as new.
All you have to do is soak the Brown Sugar Bear in filtered water, then it’s ready to use!
I’ve also discovered that you can take that brick-hard bag of brown sugar, open it up and put it in an air tight container with a brown sugar bear and the next day the brown sugar will be soft.
You’ll open the lid and think, “Hmm…. that looks exactly like it did yesterday.” Then you’ll touch it and it’ll crumble right back into a nice pile of soft brown sugar. Just break it up a bit and let it sit with the bear for a bit longer and it will only get softer.
Other Terra Cotta Options
Not really a bear person? Amazon has some other cute terra cotta figurines.
Check these out these brown sugar savers:
This idea I found is neat too. This canister holds the terra cotta disc in the top of it so you don’t have to dig around in the sugar to find it. I’d love to find a glass one like that!
I hope this simple hack to keep brown sugar soft will be life-changing for your family the same way it was with ours! I no longer have to toss brown sugar that’s hardened, and I can prevent it from ever becoming hard in the first place!
