Do your kids have too many toys in their bedroom? Learn how we decluttered our home and get ideas for gifts for kids that aren’t toys.
Christmas is just around the corner, and many parents are already dreading the sheer number of new toys that will be entering our homes on the big day. It’s amazing how quickly kids’ closets fill up with toys – and how much more quickly they take over the floor.
Kids can have too many toys, and I know that my girls probably fell into this category when they were younger. Now that they’re a bit older, we have it much more under control and we don’t allow as many gifts.
Over the years, we donated a lot of toys to families that were unable to buy their children Christmas presents. It was a great lesson for the girls and it really helped to declutter their room. And I slowly moved bags of toys out of their room as they outgrew them… without replacing them.
If you’re able to prevent the build up of toys before the mound is staring you in the face, count yourself lucky. I never planned to allow my kids to have so many toys, but it happened anyways!
If you’re still early enough in the game to not have an insurmountable number of toys in your house, then you need to continue being proactive to keep it that way. One way to help the cause is to come up with a list of gift ideas that is an alternative to toys when people ask what your child wants for Christmas.
5 Gift Ideas for Kids Besides Toys
Kids grow so fast that you can ask for clothing in the next size up to put away. Or, if your kid is hard to buy for, consider asking for gift cards to their favorite clothing store.
Is there a local theme park or attraction your kids enjoy? Suggest tickets or gift certificates. We often gift our girls weekend trips now that they’re older!
Some people think it’s tacky to ask for cash, but you can establish an account early that will help your child pay for their first car or college education. Young kids won’t even notice you tucking their cash away for a rainy day.
4. Art Supplies
Art is quickly disappearing from school curriculum. It’s important for families to encourage a love of art in the home now more than ever.
Art supplies are always welcome. But there are some awesome companies out there like Green Kid Crafts that have kits all put together and ready to go.
5. Digital Movies
We’ve stopped buying DVDs for our kids and have started purchasing digital movies instead. There is less waste and the girls are happy they can always find the movie they want to watch.
Prevention is always the best method when it comes to avoiding the mountain of toys so many of us face every single day. Instead of buying your kids toys for Christmas this year, consider a more eco-friendly alternative.
