Low energy is something I have dealt with ever since I became a mom. I don’t think I’m alone! The sleepless nights, the constant caring for others and the stress of keeping everything moving smoothly can be draining. While I love being a mom, I am constantly on the hunt for natural energy boosters that can get me back to feeling how I did before kids.
Before you start on a journey to improve your low energy levels, it’s a good idea to visit your doctor to have your thyroid and hormone levels checked. If your levels are out of whack, it can cause low energy. Since my levels were normal, I set out on a journey to improve my overall health and wellness naturally. Through my journey, I have found some natural energy boosters that work well for me.
Most of the natural energy boosters I recommend involve changing your lifestyle. That can be hard for some people, but if you truly want to feel better and solve your low energy challenges, then you have to look at your lifestyle and be open to change. It takes a big shift in how you think and act. If I can do it, so can you!

1. Start Your Day with Protein
Do you eat breakfast every day? Your body needs fuel every morning so that you have energy to get through the day. It’s a mistake to grab a muffin, bowl of cereal or anything else that’s full of empty calories though. You’ll just be in for a bigger crash if that’s how you start your day.
Having protein as part of your first meal of the day is critical to maintaining energy levels throughout the day. I like to fry up some eggs from our backyard chickens. However, during winter they don’t lay much so I usually rely upon protein powder. Making a protein shake is easy and you can toss in some fruit, peanut butter or other ingredients to mix up the flavors. I even add collagen peptides (an easily digestible source of protein) to my coffee!
2. Get Some Sunshine
Since I work at home, there are days (sometimes weeks) where I don’t leave the house. While it’s nice to be able to focus on work during the day and my family during the evenings, it’s easy to forget about taking care of myself.
Getting sunshine is great for improving energy, regulating moods and triggering the natural production of vitamin D. During the winter, it’s especially important to get outside and get some sunshine. All you have to do is go out mid-day with skin exposed and stand in the sun for 10 minutes.
It’s amazing what a difference it makes! If you still have low vitamin D levels, consider supplementing.
3. Get Plenty of Exercise
I have made every excuse in the book why I can’t exercise. My preference is to work out at the gym. It’s easiest for me because I am free of distractions.
However, it’s harder for me to get to the gym during the winter (due to weather) and summer (since the kids are out of school). That means that half of the year I have to find a way to exercise at home if I’m going to get it done. I have been streaming some exercise videos and following along with them.
Another great natural energy booster is to get outside and go for a walk. Weather permitting, I love to go for walks. I wear a fitness monitor every day so I know if I’m getting my steps in. If you don’t have a pedometer, it can be a great motivator to help you get out and walk more.
4. Drink Your Weight in Water
Do you stay hydrated? Dehydration is one of the biggest causes of low energy levels. Our body is made of about 70% water, so it’s critical we’re drinking enough water. For me, the recommended 8 glasses (64 ounces) of water just isn’t enough.
I strive to drink my weight in water, meaning one ounce of water per pound of body weight (I easily drink a gallon of water a day). I carry a glass water bottle with my everywhere so I never have an excuse for not drinking enough water.
5. Keep a Food Journal
Do you know what you’re really eating during the day? Are your food choices contributing to your low energy, or are they acting as a natural energy booster? The best way to find out is to keep a food journal for at least 2 weeks. Be completely honest with yourself when you are tracking your food.
At the end of two weeks, read through it and figure out if there are any patterns with your fatigue and your food choices. Then make a plan of how you can change your eating habits to align better with your goals
6. Say Goodbye to Alcohol
I fought this piece of advice for a long time. At the end of a long, stressful day, I thought there was nothing better than a glass of red wine. Turns out that glass of wine was causing more problems than it solved. I said goodbye to alcohol about 4 months ago and I haven’t looked back.
My energy levels have improved significantly, it’s much easier to get out of bed in the morning and I sleep better too. I replaced my glass of wine with herbal tea, which was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my overall health, including my energy levels.
7. Take a Look at Your Sleep Patterns
I knew I wasn’t sleeping well, but I didn’t really know the extent of it until I started wearing a fitness tracker. It turns out that I was barely getting 6 hours of sleep a night, and that 6 hours was broken. Broken sleep is nearly as bad as no sleep for your low energy levels.
Once I recognized there was a problem, I knew I needed to fix it. I sleep better when I exercise, eat well and don’t consume alcohol. I also like to make sure I stick to a sleep routine and I’m asleep by 11 since I have to be up by 7. That means I have to be in bed by 10:30.
Getting enough sleep is one of the best natural energy boosters there is. I can tell a huge difference in my energy levels when I get a full night’s sleep.
8. Add Meditation Into Your Day
Meditation is something I have wanted to incorporate into my life more for a while now. This year, it’s one of my personal goals to meditate more. I feel less frazzled and more focused when I meditate. Some even say that 20 minutes of meditation is the equivalent of eight hours of sleep (source). So if a lack of sleep is one of the sources of your low energy, then meditation will be a great choice for you.
If you really struggle with meditating, you can find guided meditations that can help. Adult coloring books are even being deemed a way to meditate for those that are easily distracted.
9. Become a Positive Thinker
Pay attention to your thoughts. Do they skew more on the positive or negative side? I got to a place where my thoughts were more negative than positive, and it was really draining my energy.
I tried very hard to think more positive thoughts, but I really struggled with it until I started seeing an energy healer. She has worked with me to turn the way I think upside down over the past few months.
I feel like a new person since I shifted to positive thinking. I definitely attribute it to increased energy levels since negative thoughts can be so draining. It’s one of my favorite natural energy boosters. Once you make the shift, it becomes second nature!
10. Ask for Help
Something I have always struggled with is asking for help. I even wrote a paper about it in college. I have always been fiercely independent and pushed to be able to do anything and everything I set my mind to. After becoming a mom, however, it all just got to be too much to juggle on my own.
I tried for years to keep all of the balls up in the air by myself until I started dropping them. Over the last several months, I have been delegating more tasks. I try hard to tell my husband exactly what I need him to do and I hire out tasks for my business that someone else can do.
It’s a huge weight lifted not to feel like I have to do it all. The relief of that burden has definitely been a natural energy booster for me.
11. Delve Into Aromatherapy
Scents can be very powerful for improving mood and energy. I have a whole set of essential oils that are specifically formulated to help keep your moods where you want them to be. Being able to influence my mood and energy levels through aromatherapy has been very powerful for me.
One of the easiest ways to give yourself an energy boost with essential oils is to put a drop of peppermint into your hands and rub them together. Then cup them over your nose and inhale deeply. The peppermint will pep your right up – it’s one of the best natural energy boosters with an immediate effect!
12. Add Supplements that are Natural Energy Boosters
I can tell a huge difference in my energy levels when I feed my body right. I recently started taking Ashwagandha and I’m loving the effects.
