Is your spice cabinet limited because of how expensive they are at the grocery store? Learn the reasons why I buy spices by the pound.
When people come over to our house, they often think we’re nuts when they look in our spice cabinet. More things are in quart-sized mason jars than anything else.
If they got a peek in our pantry, they’d probably be even more astounded by the large quantity of spices we always have on hand. Jars and jars and jars along with bulk bags of spices.
Why do we have so many spices you ask? There are a few reasons!
It’s More Affordable
I know you’ve been in the spice aisle in the grocery store. Doesn’t it seem insane how expensive some of those spices are?
The spices sold in tiny jars in the grocery store are so overpriced it’s crazy. There are some things that I’ll buy that size – like a specialty spice for a particular recipe and I know I won’t use that spice for anything else.
If it’s not something unusual like that, it makes a lot more sense for us to buy spices by the pound. I buy bulk Sea Salt in 10-pound bags. I buy other things in 1-pound packages like garlic powder, oregano, basil, paprika, cumin and all of the staple spices that you find in my spice blends.
You can see some of my favorite bulk spices in my Amazon Shop.
What’s an average small jar of organic spice cost at the grocery store? Where we live, it’s about $6-8 as long as it’s not something specialized like Saffron or Vanilla Beans. You’ll pay closer to $20 at the store for something like that.
That’s why I buy spices by the pound. For example, you can usually buy a pound of organic oregano on Amazon for under $20 (prices vary). There are 16 ounces in a pound. That’s somewhere around $1.25 per ounce.
The small spice jar at the grocery store only holds about 0.5 ounces of Oregano. At my bulk prices, that’s only $0.63 for the same thing you’d pay $6-8 at the grocery store. It just makes sense!
I Make a Lot of Spice Mixes
You might be wondering if we’ve had the same pound of each of those spices for years, and the easy answer is absolutely not. We go through a ton of spices.
One of the reasons we go through so many single herb spices is because I make my own spice mixes. I have even started making our favorite spice mixes by the quart because we go through them so fast!
It’s super convenient to have all of your favorite spice mixes pre-made. It makes dinner prep so much quicker when you can just dump some seasoning out of a jar into a pan and have it taste amazing.
We Cook From Scratch
That’s one of the many reasons we cook from scratch for nearly every meal. We do go out to restaurants sometimes, but it’s usually when that’s our best option.
We just like our cooking so much better than we like restaurants. Not only is it healthier, it tastes better too. And it’s more affordable.
Since we cook from scratch and we like our food well seasoned, we go through a ton of spices. So it just makes sense for us to buy spices in bulk!
There are so many reasons to buy spices by the pound. You can save money, make more spice blends and cook more meals from scratch.
