Constant Sol Review: Best Sun Protection Clothing for Women

Thanks to my history of skin cancer, I am mindful of how much I expose my skin to the sun’s rays. I spend more time in the shade and cover up when I plan to spend a long day in the sun. Read my Constant Sol review to learn why they make the best sun protection clothing for women that’s both functional and fashionable.

I was diagnosed with melanoma when I was 27. I felt fortunate it was caught so early, but having melanoma changed how I look at my relationship with the sun.

Ever since, I’ve become more aware of how much time I spend in the sun. I try to get enough sunshine for my body to get its natural vitamin D without staying out too long and burning from the harmful UV rays.

As someone who loves nature and the outdoors, there are times when I want to stay in the sun longer. Sunscreen is a good option on many occasions, but it doesn’t offer the level of protection you get from UPF clothing.

While wearing a sun hat and rash guard is a good option for spending a hot summer day at the beach, there are times when I want to wear something a bit more stylish. So I started researching companies that make UPF clothing for women.

Constant Sol is one company that makes women’s sun protection clothing that is not only functional, but fashionable too. Allison Dvorak, the founder of the company, was kind enough to send me some of the best sellers from her capsule collection after hearing how much my story sounded like her own story of having both melanoma and basal cell carcinoma.

What is UPF Clothing?

If you’re not familiar with UPF clothing, it’s essentially sun-protective clothing. The UPF stands for ultraviolet protection factor, much like SPF stands for sun protection factor when you’re looking at sunscreen or sun block.

This special protective fabric blocks the sun’s harmful rays from being able to reach your skin and cause sun damage or premature aging. All the clothing items in Constant Sol’s collection are rated UPF 50+, which is the highest UPF rating apparel can receive.

They block at least 98% of the sun’s rays, including both UVA rays and UVB rays, to give you the best possible protection from UV light. Normal clothing does not provide you with this extra layer of defense… and neither does applying sunscreen.

Rather than recommending sunscreen, the Skin Cancer Foundation actually says, “Clothing is the most effective form of sun protection.” That makes so much sense because it’s so easy to forget to reapply sunscreen as often as recommended, especially when you’re participating in water sports and activities.

How is Constant Sol’s Fabric Different?

A lot of the UPF fabrics I’ve seen and felt in the past made me feel like it was only appropriate for more active outdoor activities. Constant Sol did a ton of research to find the best fabric for everyday wear clothing that would look stylish and protect skin.

They decided on 2 distinct fabrics made from synthetic fibers for their line: Luxe Essential and Sunsafe Stretch. Both the pants and tank top that I received are made from the Sunsafe Stretch Fabric and the long sleeve coverup is made from the Luxe Essential Fabric.

Key points About Luxe Essential Fabric

  • Different colors offer different UPF protection levels (Dusty Rose has the highest level)
  • Made from 100% Polyester
  • Machine washable (in cold water)
  • Quick drying (hang to dry)
  • Wrinkle resistant

Key points About Sunsafe Stretch Fabric

  • UPF 50+
  • Made from 96% Polyester, 4% Elastane
  • Machine washable (in cold water) and air dry
  • Built-in stretch
  • Moisture wicking
  • Wrinkle resistant

Both of the options provide a soft fabric that allows for easy movement when spending time outdoors. It’s comfortable and looks nice enough to wear to a special occasion.

Best of all, the entire line is designed and hand-sewn in the United States and third-party tested to ensure their UPF fabric provides excellent protection from harmful UV radiation.

What I’m Wearing

Now that you know you’re in the right place to learn about the best sun protection clothing for women, let me break down what I’m wearing in the pictures you see.

Know that I’m wearing a size XS in each of these pieces (I’m 5’6” and just shy of 100 pounds). The sun protection clothing pieces I received all seem to run pretty true to size, and Constant Sol offers a full range of sizes from XS to XL.

Alina Tank in Black

While the Alina Tank doesn’t provide much protection for body parts on its own, it’s a cute and comfortable addition to my summer wardrobe. Even though it’s cropped, it hits at the right place when paired with the Eva Pant to look really cute.

Eva Pant in Black

I was really surprised by how comfortable the Eva Pants are. They fit my tall, thin body really well and I love that they provide good protection from the sun compared to my regular pants.

These protective bottoms are nice enough to wear to the office or an event, and you have plenty of options for styling them. My favorite thing is that in addition to the regular pockets, there’s also a zipper pocket on the right side for keeping important items safe.

Sienna Duster in Dusty Rose

The first thing I thought when I opened up the Sienna Duster is how pretty the color is (I prefer lighter colors over bright colors). This lightweight duster has long sleeves and a long length to provide proper sun protection during any outdoor activity.

It’s a versatile addition to my wardrobe because in addition to wearing it with my Alina Tank and Eva Pants, it also makes a wonderful coverup for protective swimwear to provide extra coverage.

If you’re looking for a long-sleeved shirt rather than a coverup, check out the Jovie Wrap Top. It’s also cropped and can be paired with the Alina tank for even better protection.

  1. Did constant sol go out of business? I got melanoma last year and have been looking everywhere for a duster like you have.
