Growing up, my mom would always buy Hershey’s Syrup at the grocery store. We made chocolate milk and hot cocoa with it, but since ice cream was my favorite dessert, I loved pouring it over a hot fudge sundae.

These days, I prefer to make things from scratch so I can control the ingredients and it’s more fun too. So I started making my own delicious chocolate sauce and I haven’t looked back.

It’s easy peasy to make using only two simple ingredients: chocolate chips and heavy cream. Next time you think of picking up chocolate syrup at the store, try my simple recipe instead.

  • 1 ½ cups whipping cream
  • 1 ⅓ cup chocolate chips
  • Measuring cups
  • Small sauce pan
  • Mixing spoon
  • Heat safe mixing bowl
  • Small whisk
  • Pint sized mason jar

Tips for Making the Best Chocolate Sauce

Answers to all of your questions about making this delicious recipe your whole family will love.

Favorite desserts to serve with chocolate sauce?

Chocolate sauce can be used in many different ways. Here are some of my top suggestions.

  1. Set up an ice cream sundae bar with vanilla ice cream and ice cream toppings like caramel sauce, chocolate syrup, whipped cream, nuts, etc. This sauce tastes so much better than any store bought fudge sauce I’ve tried and works great for any school ice cream social too.
  2. It’s the perfect topping for homemade cheesecake, chocolate cake or pound cake. Just drizzle it right on top!
  3. Serve a platter of sliced fresh fruit with a bowl of chocolate dipping sauce during the hot summer months.
  4. Use this sauce as a filling between layers or as a topping on an ice cream cake for the perfect chocolate flavor.
  5. Eat it straight out of the jar with a spoon!

Best way to make dairy free?

This recipe is pretty heavy in dairy-based ingredients. To make this recipe dairy free, you’ll need to use the cream from a can of coconut milk in place of the heavy cream. You’ll also need to use dairy-free chocolate chips. The consistency will be slightly different when using these ingredients.

Flavor variations?

While I like using milk chocolate chips, you can also use semi-sweet chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, unsweetened chocolate chips or even white chocolate chips.

Each type will give you a slightly different flavor. Some of the less sweet varieties may require the addition of a little sugar or maple syrup to balance the flavors.

If I use white chocolate chips, I like to add about ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract. It really makes the flavors pop. Some people like adding a pinch of sea salt, but I don’t find that necessary.

If you enjoy the flavor of peanut butter cups, try mixing a couple tablespoons of peanut butter into the sauce. It’ll give it a whole new taste.

Adjusting the consistency?

While I find this ratio of chocolate chips to cream to be the perfect consistency for rich chocolate syrup, you can make it a little thinner by using whole milk instead of cream.

How to make the sauce pourable after refrigerating?

Once refrigerated, the sauce will become quite thick… thick enough to scoop with a spoon. It you want to make it ahead of time and for it to still be pourable, you’ll need to bring it to room temperature or warm it back up on the stove.

How to store chocolate sauce?

I keep mine in a mason jar, but any airtight container should work. Store in the fridge for up to a week.
