Naturepedic EOS Mattress Review

I received a Naturepedic EOS series mattress to review in March 2016 and now we’re halfway through 2023… that’s over 7 years! So, how has my Naturepedic mattress held up over the years?

The short answer is amazing!!! This mattress has provided more than 2,000 nights of absolutely wonderful sleep. Be sure to read this full Naturepedic Mattress review to learn why they have the best organic mattresses on the market.

Brand new Naturepedic EOS Cal King Mattress fully assembled.

I had been thinking about getting a new mattress for quite some time. There are just so many options that it’s hard to decide on the best one! After the girls got a non-toxic kids mattress, I really wanted to replace my expensive memory foam mattress, which I discovered had become moldy!

After I made that discovery, I went quickly into research mode to figure out which mattress to get because I couldn’t sleep on that mattress anymore. I knew I didn’t want another memory foam mattress that would off-gas toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but I didn’t know what type of mattress I’d end up with.

It’s a big deal to buy a new mattress and I wanted to make the right decision. During my research, I was dismayed to discover that many of the “organic brands” weren’t fully organic. They do use some organic materials, but not 100% like I was looking for. There were really only a handful of companies that I considered buying from and Naturepedic was one of them.

The timing was really fortuitous because Naturepedic had just launched their EOS series, which is a customizable mattress line. If you’re wondering, EOS stands for Ergonomic Organic Sleep.

I had been looking at mattresses where each person could each customize the firmness of their side, but the other options I found were not non-toxic. After hearing my story about the moldy mattress, they offered to send me a new mattress to review. I was more than happy for them to send me a sample to test, and I’m happy to say it was the right decision for me.

I’ve been sleeping on that mattress for over 6 years now, and it’s still going strong, even after a move to a new house. If you’re searching for a new mattress, be sure to read this entire post because it contains all of my research that went into choosing Naturepedic for my mattress as well as stuff I’ve learned since then.

Naturepedic Organic Mattresses are Naturally Safe.

Close up of Naturepedic organic mattress cover that says, "Naturepedic, organic cotton on it."

If you’re like me, you want to buy the safest products possible for your family. The Naturepedic EOS line is not only non-toxic, but organic too.

Most organic brands in the mattress industry use some organic ingredients. However, the entire EOS mattress is certified organic to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). Additionally, all latex is certified to the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and the UL formaldehyde-free standard. Love that so much!

In addition, the Naturepedic EOS organic mattress does not contain any toxic flame retardants. That doesn’t mean it’s flammable though! It naturally meets and exceeds all federal and state flammability standards without the use of chemical fire retardants. Naturepedic does this by using a design that does not use any petrochemicals or polyurethane foam.

Naturepedic doesn’t use unnecessary additives either, so you won’t be dealing with the typical off-gassing smell like I did with my old mattress (and like what happens with all memory foam mattresses).

You can also feel confident that Naturepedic is telling you the truth when they claim that emissions aren’t coming from their organic mattresses because the Naturepedic line is certified to the stringent GREENGUARD® GOLD standard. I sleep much better knowing my family isn’t inhaling harmful chemicals all night long!

The Most Customizable Organic Mattress Line.

When I was shopping for a new bed, I liked the idea of getting a customizable mattress where each side of the bed could have a different level of firmness. However, the other brands I looked at were not organic or non-toxic, so I didn’t make a purchase. Fortunately, Naturepedic introduced its EOS organic mattress series, which is customizable and uses no harmful chemicals, right when I needed it.

Choose Your Firmness Level.

When you buy a Naturepedic EOS organic mattress, you get to choose the firmness level for each side of the bed. Some body types need added support, so I love that you can customize these hybrid mattresses to your individual needs.

No matter whether you prefer a softer mattress, medium firmness or a firmer mattress, you can get what you want. Because of this flexibility, a Naturepedic mattress can work well for side sleepers, stomach sleepers and back sleepers.

Even if you and your partner prefer or need different levels on the firmness scale due to differences in preference, sleeping style or body weight, this setup has the dual firmness option so you can choose different levels so you can both get healthier sleep.

There are four levels of firmness for each mattress, which may include extra plush, plush, cushion firm, firm or extra firm. Cushion firm is the most popular level, so that’s what both of us went with. You get a trial period so if you don’t like the feel of the natural mattresses, you can exchange the comfort layers within 90 days for free (and only pay for shipping).

Fortunately, I made the right choice! Cushion firm is the perfect level for both of us. Even if you change your mind after 90 days, you can still order new layers and change the support or comfort of the mattress without having to replace the entire mattress. Love that! It’s not only more affordable, but more environmentally friendly too.

Three Mattress Options: Classic, Pillow Top and Trilux.

I have a classic EOS mattress, but if you want something a bit more plush or luxurious, there are two upgraded options as well.

Is the Naturepedic EOS Mattress Easy to Assemble?

When you first see how many components are included in a Naturepedic EOS mattress, it may have you wondering if it’s easy to put together. I am the one in the family that assembles all of the furniture, so I felt pretty confident that I’d be able to assemble the mattress myself.

My Naturepedic EOS Classic California King Mattress arrived in four large boxes. After getting the boxes to the bedroom, I was able put the mattress together on my own.

Four large shipping boxes that contain a Naturepedic EOS mattress that's ready to be assembled.

The Naturepedic website says it should take two people 15 minutes to assemble the EOS mattress, so I knew it would take me longer on my own. All in all, it took me about an hour to put the mattress together by myself because I made a few mistakes along the way. Do yourself a favor and make sure you understand the instructions before you start.

The Assembly Process: Looking at the Layers.

While instructions will be included with your purchase, I feel like the best way to show you how much thought went into the creation of the EOS line is to walk you through the assembly process so you can see each piece for yourself.

Step 1: Set up the Mattress Encasement.

You start by opening the box that says, “Open This Box First.” Inside that box, you’ll find the mattress encasement. Lay that out across your foundation open. While you’ll see an old plastic foundation in these images, we’ve since upgraded to a Naturepedic foundation and wish we’d done that from the start.

Step 2: Set Up the Coil Support Layer.

Next, you’ll put the bottom support layers into the mattress case. Make sure you follow the directions and the brown stripe faces the outside of your bed.

I missed this step the first time and had to re-do it. It’s very important that you get this step right because the stripes indicate that is the side of the mattress with edge support, and you want that on the outside or you’ll end up with a hump in the middle of your mattress.

There are 2 of these pieces and they’re each vacuum-sealed. It was neat to see how they were packaged for shipping.

This bottom support layer is an 8″ breathable encased coil system. The Naturepedic EOS organic mattress features support coils that are individually wrapped in a plant-based PLA fabric for full body-contouring and proper postural alignment. This method also eliminates the need to use glue or adhesives in assembly.

I love the encased coils because it helps lessen how much you feel your partner’s movements next to you. I feel the motion transfer more than I felt it with a memory foam mattress, but the EOS has better motion isolation than a standard coil mattress.

Step 3: Insert the Latex or Microcoil Comfort Layers.

After you get the bottom support layers in right, you’ll be putting in the top layer, which is a 3” latex comfort layer. If you have a latex sensitivity, you can substitute latex for a microcoil layer with some EOS models.

I went with the latex comfort layer because it seemed like it would be more comfortable for us, and I believed it would help us feel not as much movement as the coil layer. It was a good decision

I was surprised that compared to a memory foam mattress, the Naturepedic mattress has good heat dissipation, so it feels cooler and less “sweaty” than my old mattress. If you aren’t familiar with the properties of natural latex, it’s one of the most breathable and temperature neutral materials available. So if you live in a warm climate, it’s a great choice.

It also has good pressure relief qualities, which I love because I hate waking up with a sore lower back! I really don’t feel any pressure points with this mattress.

Natural latex is made from the sap of the rubber tree – it’s not a synthetic material made in a lab like a lot of latex. Naturepedic only uses latex foam that’s sourced from reputable certified organic suppliers. The finished foam is certified to the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and wrapped in a stretch-knit organic cotton outer casing.

I was so excited by the time I got to this point in the assembly process that I forgot to take pictures of this step!

Step 4: Zip Up Organic Mattress Encasement.

Once you get the comfort layers in, you zip up the quilted cover encasement, which is made from organic cotton fabric and other natural materials. It’s a really snug fit, so I had to wrestle with it a bit, but it zipped up nicely and the mattress looked beautiful. Even 6 years later, the zipper system is holding up great.

The top of the mattress encasement is an organic cotton cover that’s super soft. It’s filled with organic wool batting that wicks away moisture, provides natural fire protection and offers temperature regulation. This means it keeps you warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

Under the wool, there’s one more layer of non-GMO PLA that’s made from potatoes. This layer also helps to wick moisture and add additional comfort.

Once you zip up the encasement around the sides of the bed, you’d have no idea how many customizable components are inside the mattress. It’s very comfortable! I started sleeping better than I’d slept in a long time after getting my Naturepedic organic mattress set up.

Great Customer Service from a US-Based Company.

Naturepedic is a family-owned business located in Chagrin Falls, Ohio that was founded in 2003. All of Naturepedic’s mattresses are made in the USA by skilled Amish craftsman (a combination of domestic and imported fabrics are used). Some of the materials they use are sourced from outside of the US, but everything is actually made here.

Naturepedic is so confident in the quality of their chemical-free mattresses that they offer a 25-year limited warranty. That is huge compared to the typical 10-year warranty you get from most mattress companies.

And, as part of the Naturepedic difference, they also offer a 100-night trial, so if you aren’t happy with your purchase (made directly through Naturepedic), you may return your EOS mattress for a full refund within 100 days of purchase (minus shipping fees).

I value customer support and customer care when dealing with companies. Naturepedic is top-notch in those areas. These are truly some of the nicest people you’ll come across and they truly believe in making the best organic beds possible.

And I believe in buying from quality businesses based in the United States is more important than ever. Naturepedic checks all of those boxes!

Other Naturepedic Mattress Options.

If you really want to invest in an organic mattress, but the EOS isn’t a great fit for you, Naturepedic has more than one organic option that may meet your needs.

1. Chorus Mattress.

The Naturepedic Chorus mattress is a more affordable, latex-free mattress made with organic cotton and wool. It’s a good option if you want an organic mattress on a budget.

2. Serenade Mattress.

The Serenade mattress is a step up price-wise from the Chorus mattress, but is still priced lower than the EOS. It’s a hybrid mattress that uses natural latex and the coil system, but it’s not customizable.

3. Halcyon Mattress.

This is Naturepedic’s most luxurious mattress. If you’re looking for an amazingly comfortable, high-end organic mattress, you have to check out the Halcyon mattress. It’s also customizable like my EOS mattress!

4. Crib Mattresses.

Naturepedic crib mattresses feature a waterproof surface and seamless waterproof edges so urine, spit-up and other messes can never seep into the core of the mattress. The coolest thing is that the food-grade waterproof surface is made from non-GMO sugarcane unlike most crib mattresses. Two of the three models essentially have a built-in mattress protector that can be removed and washed. I love that crib mattresses can also be used in toddler beds.

5. Children’s Mattresses.

Naturepedic children’s mattresses are available in 2 styles. There are a few minor differences between them (like one has a waterproof surface and the other does not), but either one would make a great non-toxic mattress option for your kids. You can even add a mattress protector, sheets and a pillow onto your order if you’re moving from a crib mattress to a kids mattress.

Important Accessories.

You don’t really need many accessories to love your Naturepedic Mattress. I do, however, recommend a good mattress cover to protect your investment since this mattress will last a long time. The Naturepedic organic waterproof protector pad is designed for Naturepedic mattresses, so you’re sure to get a good fit by picking one up.

Their protector pad uses a 3-layer system, which includes 100% GOTS certified organic cotton in the top and bottom layers. The center is an ultra-thin non-toxic waterproof layer. Fortunately, it’s quiet compared to most waterproof mattress pads. So even though it blocks all liquid from penetrating through, it does let water vapor pass through, so it helps reduce sweat and humidity while you sleep. Prices range from $109 to $179.

Since you’re going through the process of buying the best organic mattress, you will also want to invest in a set of good organic bedding. Naturepedic has organic cotton sheets that have a soft feel and can be cleaned in the washing machine. Some other places that have good organic bedding are Nest Bedding and Coyuchi.
