Salves are easier to make than they may seem and the base ingredients help keep the essential oils from evaporating so quickly, so they linger longer.

This DIY Women’s Monthly Salve uses 6 different essential oils that have a wonderful scent for the time of the month when you need extra comfort. You can also use the Feminine-Aid blend instead of individual oils.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cooling Time: 4 hours
Total Time: 30 minutes
Makes: 4 tins

Supplies

  • 2 tablespoons beeswax pastilles
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon sweet almond oil
  • 4 drops fennel essential oil
  • 8 drops marjoram essential oil
  • 8 drops clary sage essential oil
  • 6 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 8 drops lavender essential oil
  • 4 drops lemongrass essential oil

Tools

  • Measuring spoons
  • Double Boiler
  • Stir stick
  • Salve containers with lids

Instructions

  • Add the beeswax, coconut oil and sweet almond oil to your double boiler over medium heat. Stir until melted and clear. Remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly, but don't allow it to start hardening.

  • Add in your essential oils. A few of these are thin in consistency and the drops will start to come out fast if you tip them too far, so just take it slowly as you count them out. Once the oils are all added, give it a good stir to mix them in thoroughly.

  • Pour the salve into the containers. Take it slow as your pour, much like you did with the oil drops and if it happens to begin to set up fast, you can put it back over the heat to loosen it back up, but likely it won’t unless you stop in the middle.

  • You will need to leave the lids off and let the balms sit out at room temperature until they are fully cooled off. It took close to an hour for mine, but it can vary depending on the type of container you use.

  • Once the bottom of the container is no longer warm, it is good to go and you can put on your lids. Add a cute label if you’d like, and they are all set to use.

Notes

To use, dip a fingertip into the salve, getting about a pea-sized amount and rub into abdomen and/or lower back. Repeat as needed.

  1. Is there something I could replace fennel essential oil and marjoram essential oil with? I have never had the need of the use of these essential oils and wanted to see if I could replace these with other essential oils.

  2. Chrystal, what can be used in place of Clary Sage until I can attempt to grow some? My mouth dropped open when I saw how much it would cost for a tiny amount. Is there a substitute for it that works? I’ve heard it’s one of the best herbs for cramps and the other essential oils are used just to make CS produce a stronger effect. Do you know? My daughter in law has such bad cramps I was looking for something to help her. I’m a professional soap maker and a beauty product student. LOL. I LOVE to make natural/homemade things. I don’t sell my products but, my family and friends love them. I guess it’s my hobby since I’m retired.

  3. Is there something that i can use instead of the sweet almond oil? I have severe cramps and would love to give this a try but I’m allergic to the almond oil!
